Just out of interest, have any of the engineers fully checked your connection from the Fibre cab to your property?

Re: Internet up and down like a yoyo this morning

I was told they would, whether they actually have is a question I can't answer, it's been the same engineer both times so far so he knew exactly what the situation was when he got here this morning, I just told him whatever he'd tried on Saturday hadn't worked.

He said he'd try swapping pairs, and I assume that's what he did when he left the property, when he returned and ran a quiet line test on his equipment at the test socket everything seemed fine when he left, and for a couple of hours everything *was* fine apart from the reconnect when the DSM changed my speeds, up until a short while ago when the connection started dropping again and I ran another quiet line test myself.

OK. He sounds clued up, but my last couple of minor problems were associated with the overhead wires from the local PCP -'other' telecoms providers had been up the poles and disturbed the connection on the second occasion, on the first the connection on the mast serving our six properties, had corroded.

As far as I'm aware there's only BT with anything on poles in my area, though I do remember a lot of years ago having a similar corrosion to what you describe on the pole that serves my house, water ingress over winter basically knackered the whole thing and everyones lines went dead as a result, I did tell him about that happening both times he's been here but not sure if he's been up the pole to have a look.

Re: Internet up and down like a yoyo this morning

Right, engineer has been out - a different one this time - and as soon as he got here he took one look at where the wiring enters the property, one look at where the master socket was, and said that was the likely cause of the problem.. Fair enough says I, it's been there in that way since I moved in here over 30 years ago (only the faceplate on the master socket has ever changed in that time).

So new cable run from the external connection to a new master socket in the living room instead of in the hall, maybe this will fix it but I'm not holding my breath, also the engineer basically said that if it doesn't then there's not much more they can actually do, which I'm pretty sure isn't true.

Also no chance anyone is checking the pole, 42 knot winds and sideways rain are the weather of the day.

OK - keep us updated.

I wouldn't expect them to climb poles, or even use platforms, in this weather.

Re: Internet up and down like a yoyo this morning

So my internet has managed to stay connected for over 24hrs at this point, so I think things are on the right track, I am however still seeing CRC errors (not many, 660ish over that period) and I just ran another quiet line test and can hear very faint noise on the line which I'm guessing is probably the cause.

Right now I'm weighing up whether I want to have to deal with the hassle of another explaining this whole situation to another engineer/support agent, especially since the last one that came out basically said there's nothing much more that they can do as on their kit "no problems" are shown when clearly there actually is a problem.
