Internet Intermittently Offline

I have PlusNet fibre, with an Router ASUS 66 RT-N66U.
Sometimes both my Internet Explorer 10 and Outlook 2007 go off-line intermittently.  On occasions they are off-line from the moment I boot up the PC
Plusnet Assist sometimes tries to fix the issue, particularly in respect of email.  Frequently it says that the problem has been fixed, when in fact it has not.
However, usually internet link has not been lost.  Some programmes installed in the PC can continue to use the internet, although others may not.
I.E 10 often displays a message “This page can’t be displayed”
I click “Fix Connection Problems”.  Windows Network Diagnostics then sets to work, but I end up with “Troubleshooting Couldn’t Identify the Problem”
Very occasionally I seem to find that by changing the settings IE10 Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Enable Enhanced Protection Mode,  normal on-line state is resumed.  i.e. if enhanced Protection Mode is “Ticked” I un-tick it, or if it is not “Ticked” I tick it.   However, often that has no effect.
On other occasions the PC goes back on line without me doing anything.
And once in a while I need to reset the router.
Any suggestions please?

Re: Intermittent Offline

Hi.
Runs Windows 7 and yes to wirelessly.  However, the wireless connection remains solid throughout.  I can print things via wireless even though I am off-line temporarily as far as the internet is concerned.

Re: Intermittent Offline

Have you tried changing the wireless connection DNS settings on your PC, from AUTO or DHCP to 208.67.220.220 and 8.8.8.8, then reboot the PC and see whether that fixes it.

Re: Intermittent Offline

Just another thought, while you are in the wireless network settings, as an experiment in stability, can you set a static IP address for the PC using a value that is outside the DHCP address pool of your router.  Again restart the PC after making the network address changes.

Re: Intermittent Offline

I hadn't tried making changes to wireless network settings because the wireless link seems very solid.  It is just the internet for IE10 and Outlook goes down.  Some programmes carry on fine with the Internet despite IE10 and Outlook being down.
It went Internet off-line a few minutes ago.  I changed IE Tools, Internet Options, Advanced from Enable Advanced Protection mode from tick to no tick and IE10 and Outlook immediately went back on line for the internet.
This whole intermittent off-line internet issue has cropped up only very recently. Previously, I was on-line solidly.  I don't know what has changed to cause it. I have had same PC, same router and fibre for quite a while.

Hi grecian,
Thought I'd post a graph of your connection log as we have it recorded:

Looks pretty stable to be honest, not sure what's dropping out there but it doesn't seem to be the connection. Please let us know if there's anything we can look into for you though.

Re: Internet Intermittently Offline

Thanks.  Yes I would agree with the log. The internet link to the router is reliable, it is basically Internet Explorer and Outlook that go off-line. Some other programmes remain on-line while IE and Outlook are down. It is tricky to find the cause of the fault, because it is intermittent and usually IE and Outlook eventually go back on spontaneously for no reason that I can identify.  Having said that, changing the settings on Advanced Protection Mode on IE sometimes restores things immediately.  But not always!

Re: Internet Intermittently Offline

Are there any errors in your router log?  (192.168.1.1 > System Log)
Which f/w version are you running?

Re: Internet Intermittently Offline

Router log shows no errors.
F/W 3.0.0.4.374_979-gbc8961e (which is the latest version)
Although the PC is offline, other Wi-Fi functions work fine (e.g. printer) and other devices can connect to the internet via the router (e.g. mobile phone)
Normally it comes back on line apparently spontaneously after approx. 10 minutes.  Quite often it is off-line when initially booted up but after about 10 minutes or so goes on line.
Changing settings in IE Tools / Internet options / Advanced / Enable Enhanced Protection Mode brings it back on line but not always.

Re: Internet Intermittently Offline

I am experiencing the same problem, but have regular broadband with a Technicolor TG582n router and Windows 8.1. Did you manage to solve this grecian?
