Internet Connection dropping, router says connected

I have a linksys x2000 router and I keep finding the connection to the web has dropped, although logging in the status says connected and lists the dns address majority of the time. It's the only firmware available so is up to date
Seems to happen more and more often.
Yesterday I bought a smart tv connected by wifi, also iPad iPhone, laptop and another phone connected at different points of day by wifi.
Nas drive is connected by cable and pc too.
Any suggestion what to try to fix this, is it something obvious?
Some times the dsl screen shows disconnected but not often, it's usually connected but no web traffic is going through.
Can I ping my plus net ip address externally somehow to see if it's 'online', when the connection drops, I can no longer remote access the Nas either.
When it's in this state, I can still stream media from the nas to the tv and pc's.
Will try another router too but any other suggestions are welcomed
Thanks

Re: Internet Connection dropping, router says connected

Hi there,
Looks like there have been a few drops over the past couple of days:
<img src="http://ccgi.psmith12.plus.com/visradius/generated/image13230946727580.png" />
Might be worth testing another router, though I'd check both in the test socket behind the master socket front plate with all other items unplugged from the line. That will rule out any wiring faults or issues caused by equipment in your premises.
EDIT: Forgot to add, sorry - thinkbroadband offer a ping meter that'll monitor your service, you can find details here: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping

Re: Internet Connection dropping, router says connected

Matt thats brilliant advice and help, thanks very much
All the breaks in connection look like when the internet access had stopped adn so the router was turned off and on, but as I say the router reports the connection is still there. Yesterday (Sun 4th) was a nightmare.
That graph suggests to me that the adsl connection was there and the router was reporting it correctly but for some reason the router wasnt allowing traffic in or out, does that seem right to you Matt?
Like today from before 8am internet was down until I called home for the router to be turned off and on - thats the break around 10am
I have got another identical router to try today so will see what happens.
Cheers

Re: Internet Connection dropping, router says connected

Depends if you use the wireless or not but could it have been drops in the wireless connection between PC and router rather than the router to the internet?
If not that then either router issues or possibly a DNS failure (if it was failing to find sites but able to connect to IP addresses)? If the latter try setting the DNS servers in the router manually:
Our servers are 212.159.6.9, 212.159.6.10, 212.159.13.49 and 212.159.13.50 (use any two). Alternatively you could try google's - 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

Re: Internet Connection dropping, router says connected

will give it a try.
Its not a wireless issue as able to get on the network drive to play music or video on the tv.
On phones its connecting to the router but not getting any further. Also got an app to use the phone as a remote control for TV and thats fine too durign the issues.
I will try setting the DNS manually and the new router. and go from there.

Re: Internet Connection dropping, router says connected

Right then, some progress.
I changed the router but left in original location on the extention wire so I was only changing one thing at a time. All good so far.
Avoided the advanced settings and set up through the software supplied.
I have since been on advanced settigns to try to allow me to ping using the link you offered Matt for think broadband but dont see an option. I have removed the firewall to see if that will allow the ping test to work but still reports 100% packet loss, and ip address is the correct one. Maybe the router just doesnt have that option in it?

Re: Internet Connection dropping, router says connected

Hi r18rws,
You've had a solid connection since 8 o'clock last night so looks like that did the trick. Is everything looking ok at your end?

HI Rich,
Not really sure how to help you with the ping meter; may be worth checking their site for any FAQs that could help, or maybe post a thread on their forum.

Re: Internet Connection dropping, router says connected

Yesterday we had problem on phone line so disconnected router and fixed that. also removed all extention wiring so only one phone point in the house now.
Today got home to find the internet down again. Re booted router and back in business.
So its not the router, but the same issue, says connected but the internet has been down this afternoonevening.
Can you see if the connection dropped before 2030hrs. I am stumped with this one now. Thought it was sorted with the new router but its not Sad
EDIT - I have connected direct to main socket and the jitter dropped from anything up to 70 down to a solid 5-11, might that be an issue?

Re: Internet Connection dropping, router says connected

Sounds like it could well be, could you try removing the front plate from the master socket and trying the connection with the router in the test socket behind that (if it has one)? I suspect from your edit that the extension wiring may well be causing the issue, it's probably worth checking to see if the bell wire is still connected and if so removing that.

Re: Internet Connection dropping, router says connected

Cheers Matt, can you do another screen sht of connection history for me?
I have removed all the extension wiring that was in, so the main socket (old version no test socket) is all thats connected.
The router is now connected directly to the main socket thruogh a filter right at the input into the house now.
Seems to be that over a duration the quality suffers until it no longer connects, although the router still says connected.
Not been able to ge the ping test to work on think broadband, must be blocked somewhere. router setting is with the firewall off and the annonymous internet requests now allowed but no joy still.
Next job will be a new BT face plate I think unless plugging in to the main plate direct has made any difference.

Hi there,
I've included logs for the past couple of days as they're easier to decipher that way, hope thats OK for you.
