Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

Slight aside.... Why does it seem to be only you and Mand, who are forum people, replying to my ticket? Does PN support work an office hours week?

It's only coincidental.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

I just got in and checked my BT profile and it is still 135kbps. Am I still having problems? My router says it's been up for over 26 hours and that reconnect was because I moved it.
It's now about 65 hours at this speed. I thought I'd at least see some kind of improvement by now even if not full speed.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

Router being up for 26 hours is a positive sign.
Hopefully if the connection remains stable, you should see an improvement in the next 24 hours.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

Just checked the BT IP profile and it's jumped to 1500kbps so now I have to wait for the PN one to sync with it.
My router is showing 49:30 hours up. Can someone confirm that this is correct from PN's point of view?

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

How long does it take for PN to catch up? I thought 12 hours but it's now at least 13.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

And now it's gone back to 135kbps. I woke up this morning to find a few resets overnight and a router with 192kbps download sync speed. I restarted and it hit 2016kbps but it's too late and BT have already crippled my line for the next 4 days. I've only had broadband up for about 2.5 days. Great service I pay for. 8 days of nothing, 2.5 days of broadband.

I am using a short cable to the socket. I am plugged into the master socket. I have got a microfilter and I have not got a phone attached (which is upsetting people since I am currently planning my dad's funeral on Thursday and noone can contact me).
I am getting extremely upset by this service. I am paying £16 per month and basically not getting the service no matter what I try to do. I have just paid out for another month of World of Warcraft and I cannot use it since I cannot connect. I cannot use my xbox. I cannot sort out the stuff I'm trying to do online for my dad. This is an appalling service and I'm getting no help. This has been going on for months now.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

Is your router plugged into the test socket?  If so it looks like you have tried everything and the fault is not likely to be your equipment.  Raise a broadband fault at http://faults.plus.net.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

Yes, I am plugged into the test socket. I've switched to my other router and knocked the firmware back to an older version that ran happily for years so I'll see if that makes a difference but I have a 4 day wait with no connection to check if it works. I can't see why when fault finding like this BT cannot be contacted and asked to up the IP profile so I can see what helps without waiting for days.
I already have a support ticket but only James and Mand seem to read it.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

Actually, ********* also posted. In 7 days I've had 3 posts. 2 of those were most likely spawned from here and the other one was nothing that really helped, just confirmed a question I already knew the answer to. Really not good support.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

I'm not satisfied either with the response times for tickets recently either.  It seems I always have to moan on the forums or on usenet to get any action at all.  My previous ticket was closed automatically because PN did not respond within two whole weeks.  TBH if I this happens again I will probably be looking for a new ISP.  There are some really helpful people at PN like Bob and James but I assume that overall PN support is understaffed.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

This sort of problem doesn't seem isolated to me either. I wonder if it's part of a bigger problem and the reason there is no support is because they know they have a problem they cannot actually solve but aren't willing to admit it. A bit of conspiracy theory, and not one I really believe but...
Anyway,
I came home just now to find there was a dropped connection while I was out and my router log says:
Sat, 2009-08-29 13:40:33 - TCP Packet - Source:190.84.214.65,3033 Destination:"One of my home PC IPs Removed" - [DCC match] <-- "DCC is because of a match with my router's firewall settings
Sat, 2009-08-29 13:41:07 - Initialize LCP.
Sat, 2009-08-29 13:41:07 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Sat, 2009-08-29 13:41:11 - CHAP authentication success
So what was that packet that was sent? I was out and all my computers were off but that packet seems to cause a dropped connection. There isn't a log message that the LCP went down though, just that it was initialised and allowed to come up.

I've just tracert'd that IP and it seems to be from Miami unless I read it wrong (I've taken off first couple of hops to hide my info)

So what is that about? Could it be that causing my drops? If not then why did I get a drop 30 seconds after it? Seems odd. I didn't notice a similar thing in the logs for the other drops so it could be a coincidence.

Re: Intermittent very slow speeds

I can't think how a TCP packet could cause your router to lose sync unless it has a firmware bug.  Even when you are not doing anything you are likely to get packets of data from time to time anyway.
