Looks like we will see if there is a telephone line "fault"

Maybe a loose screw is causing a noisy line or intermittent fault?

The solid conductor cabling that BT use to enter the house is a swine too, easily breaks due to fatigue with too much flexing especially with older wire like your friends sounds to be.  Grin

nearly as bad with electrics, you can do some work but not much

To read the info leaflets that many of the council planning departments are putting out you would think that that was the case. But a few months ago I was talking to a couple of electricians refurbishing my mums council bungalow, who said that it is possible to do most electrical work yourself, its just that it has to be signed off by a qualified (certifying) electrician before the house is sold etc.

Your right Glyn
My pals phone  wiring is about 50 years old - so rather than do half the job and get stuck - I'm inclined to let the BT technician do it. he can afford it  :), he's just spent £900 on a new laptop.  Roll_eyes

It is an older property with no BT Master socket - just sockets wired on the very old style junction boxes, and the wiring is very untidy.

It would be a good thing if that ring wire was loosened and fell out  from the 1st box where the wires enter the house Lips_are_sealed
