One word for this, but the swear filters would filter it out.  I am also appending these stats to the ticket.
Will change filter now, and see what happens

Re: Instability of 21CN and ADSL2+

Now with filter 2, still as bad......
I must note that the weather has been horrendous where I live over the past couple of days, torrential downpours, maybe this is revealing a dodgy connection??  Also of note the wire from the master socket to the external dropwire was recently replaced by BT around 9-12minths ago.  I do strongly suspect an external issue here.  There is also no crackling on the phone at all.  Will be ringing the CSC in a bit, to try and arrange an engineer vist.  Its really annoying that its the state of our antiquted network that causes most ADSL faults in the first place. If we had a 21CN network instead of 19th century copper wire, or some decent investment made in the network, this would not occur. Whats the point of all singing equipment at the exchange when the real issues lie in the local loop.  ANyhow rant over, this is a conversation for another thread.....

Re: Instability of 21CN and ADSL2+

Yep, expletive-deleted seems a good description for that behaviour.
Do you have an alternative RJ11 cable to try just to show the existing one isn't at fault? Otherwise weather-related seems favourite, with exchange cross-talk or whatever as runner up.

Re: Instability of 21CN and ADSL2+

Thanks David, yes I have a couple of bog-standard RJ11s that I will try, although I suspect there will be no difference.  Weather very good today, and have had 7hrs uptime, till 7PM this evening. Last night the connection was almost unusable, it was up and down so much.  Rang the CSC this morning, and was told it has now been passed back to faults, and they would ring me back, needless to say, no call has been forthcoming. I am happy to fault find, and realise I am on a trial, however, I am paying for a service, that I need to use. If this is not forthcoming, then I will have to ask to be moved back to 20CN, if that is indeed possible.
Again after last resync silly upload speeds.

Margin appears to be very variable, is this a symptom of anything?Huh

I think it is. Loss of connection was caused by one of the noisy events. At re-sync this event was still ongoing, and to get the 6dB upstream target SNR margin the upstream sync had to be brought down to only 272kbps. At sync time the actual SNR margin should be close to the target one, so 6dB.
Later the noisy event went away (still with the low sync speed, of course) so with less noise the actual upstream SNR margin increased considerably to 20.0dB. Had you chosen to re-sync at that point I anticipate the upstream SNR margin would have gone down to the target 6dB again with upstream sync speed around the normal 800kbps mark.
So that behaviour is just a symptom of the intermittent noise problem. Since it occurred soon after transfer to 21CN that seems favourite as the cause; however bearing in mind it was very bad during the wet weather I don't think one can rule out that it would have happened anyway. I hope the Faults team respond quickly to move your ticket forward.

Re: Instability of 21CN and ADSL2+

Well.........  as a last resort, changed the high quality RJ11 cable for a bog standard one that came with the TG585V7.  Did this at 09:45 this morning, and not had a resync since.  I am to be honest amazed.  I have looked at the High Quality cable, and compared to the cheapy, it has 4 connections instead of 2, and is much much thicker, probably all the shielding.  Can think what the issue is with it, but its obviously the problem. Will send it back for my money back, might as well stick with the cheapy, if its working OK.  I would like to express my gratitude to you david for all the help and advice.  Will keep an eye on it for a couple of days, and keep the ticket open, but fingers crossed. Do you have any ideas as to what could be the issue???  Recent router logs below.

Re: Instability of 21CN and ADSL2+

I'm delighted to hear your connection stayed up after the cable change. However I'll be happier if that remains the case after a few days (including wet weather), so many false dawns with this sort of problem.
If the good quality cable is confirmed as faulty I wonder if there is a dodgy connection in one of the RJ11 plugs, perhaps the most fragile part of the cable.
Assuming the connection stays up I think the lesson from others is to leave the connection alone and let the DLM get on with its management task. Don't worry if its next action is to increase target noise margin - there must be logic behind this though that escapes most of us and margins do come down afterwards. It might take a couple of weeks but if target noise margins reduce to 6dB you should see higher sync speeds both downstream and upstream, though what you have now is not bad. If the targets are changed your router should be forced to re-sync so no need for you to do anything.

Re: Instability of 21CN and ADSL2+

I agree david, I am going to leave well alone for a week or so, hopefully depending upon line stability. Now been up 28hrs, current margins displayed are 4db UP, 9dB Down. everything seems to be stable.

Re: Instability of 21CN and ADSL2+

Well spoke too soon  Lost sync at around 14:10 this afternoon, and has a 15min period of terrible instability.  Lost sync again after the instability had gone at 19:30, and again had a 15min period of instability.  Odd thing however is this period of resyncing is coninciding with receiving an incoming call. I have looked at the times of the 1st resync in the router logs, and timed it to the time the router was booted, and both times are virtually around the times when we have had 2 incoming calls.  I dont think then this is coincidence, and points to a line fault. I think I remember reading that a dodgy joint can be cleaned up by a call coming in, but I am confused at the 15min period of instability.  I dont think this is a filter issue, as I cannot see a 5mnth old filtered faceplate and 3 filters being faulty.  I have unplugged the phone now, and will be rebooting the router as well.  Will keep the phone disconnected for a couple of days, and see what happens.  If I have not lost sync for a couple of days, I will reconnect the phone and ring it, to see what happens. I did try ringing it after the 2nd incoming call, but couldnt get the router to resync, is this because the faulty joint is clean, and not causing an issue??  Next question is, how would BT find this intermittant fault, or am I onto a loser with this one.  Would welcome advice.  If anyone wants to check on the stats, the router was restarted at 09:47am 22/05/09. I have attached the router logs below.

Re: Instability of 21CN and ADSL2+

Well still no better, having periods still of terrible instability, and constant resyncs.  Phone disconnected as well.  I suppose it could be a faulty filter, but I very much doubt it.  Will refit the Filtered Faceplate tonight, and see what happens.  If still the same then I dont see what else I can do, but ask for a BT engineer vist.  If anyone has any better suggestions, I am open to them....

Re: Instability of 21CN and ADSL2+

In a way finding the intermittent connection problem returning with the different RJ11 cable is a relief, since the incidence of the fault just didn't seem to fit with that - more general feeling rather than science.
I think you've done everything you can to ensure the problem isn't internal now so that leaves BT. Finding an intermittent fault isn't easy unless it cooperates and happens when the engineer is on site. I guess they might try remaking joints and swapping you to a different pair to the street cabinet and possibly to the exchange. The only problem with that is that it could be to someone else's reject. But that's life.

Re: Instability of 21CN and ADSL2+

Its gone completely haywire now.....
CSC rang me this morning, to tell me they think the connection is bad.  Radius connection log attached.
I have even moved the router plug to a different socket, changed power strips etc etc etc.
Current stats as of router reboot a few mins ago
xDSL linestate up (ITU-T G.992.5; downstream: 4803 kbit/s, upstream: 627 kbit/s; output Power Down: 19.5 dBm, Up: 12.5 dBm; line Attenuation Down: 45.0 dB, Up: 24.0 dB; snr Margin Down: 15.0 dB, Up: 6.0 dB)
This is second resync is 5mins!!
BT are now getting involved, I just hope I dont get a bored engineer. Will stock up on the tea and biccies.  Last couple of engineers have been Ok though.

Re: Instability of 21CN and ADSL2+

Some Routerstats logs showing SNR plummits after a phone call is received, and general line instability after. ALso during phone call very difficult to get a good sync rate.

Not good, and sync to the exchange is appearing to struggle badly, taking over a min to get sync. Not sure on stability, and will monitor, but certainly not fixed.  An upstream margin of 9dB should show a sync of at least 600kbps I would have thought....
Also must have had even lower syncs

Fantastic eh!!!  Speedtests show
