Increase in upload speed now causing instability (and so lower download speeds)

Throughout 2012, I was getting download speeds of 8-10M and upload speeds of about 400k, and the connection was reasonably stable. I was quite happy with this (the download speed varied a little, but the upload speed was constant). However a few weeks ago, I noticed that the upload speed had suddenly increased to 1.2M. I didn’t think much of this at the time (although I had never asked for this - and I never had a problem with the old upload speed). But since then, I have noticed that my internet connection has been much less stable, frequently losing the connection.  As a result my download speed has gradually been getting lower and lower, although the upload speed has stayed the same. It has got to the point today where the upload speed is still 1.2 M, but the download speed has gone right down to 1.1M (it is now less than the upload speed). The SNR margin for upstream has gone right down to 4 or 5 , which is presumably why I am getting disconnected so often. Is there any way I can get back to the old upload speed of approx. 400k, which will hopefully increase the SNR again and mean I won’t keep getting disconnected? I don’t need the faster upload speed, especially if it is causing the instability, disconnections and subsequent reduction in download speeds. My router is Billion 7800N, and I am on firmware 1.06e which I know is not the very latest. Can I just get back to the position I was in for most of last year? Is it something I have done or something Plusnet has done?

You can request your upload is capped by raising a ticket (or one of the nice PN bods on the forum could pick it up from here).
PN have started a mass "upload uncapping", although in very occasional cases it does cause problems that you are seeing.

Re: Increase in upload speed now causing instability (and so lower download speeds)

Hi,
I'm really sorry for the problems you are experiencing with the dropping on your connection. I've taken a good look at your line and can see that your line is banded. This means your speeds have been restricted, normally due to your connection dropping. Here is a look at your connection:

Has anything changed in your property or has your router been moved? It may be that the uncapping of your upstream has caused your line to become unstable, but in theory it shouldn't really happen. If you'd like me to cap your upload speeds, I can certainly get that done for you.

Re: Increase in upload speed now causing instability (and so lower download speeds)

Thanks ever so much for these fast replies. I have been trying to think of anything that may have changed from our side, but the only difference here in recent weeks is an extra device – my wife’s new iPad. I know we shouldn’t jump to conclusions and there are probably many variables, but if it is not a big job to put the cap back on my upload speed, it sounds like it would be worth trying – I appreciate that I may be lumbered with low download speeds for a while yet, but if the line becomes stable again as a result of the cap being put back on the upload speed, then hopefully the download speed will gradually go back up again. So, yes please Chris – please put the cap back on my upload speed?
Current snapshot:
Upstream 1232
Downstream 1150
SNR Upstream 5.6
SNR Downstream 17.9
Line Att (Upstream) 15.2
Line Att (Downstream) 29.0

Yep that's no problem. That's sorted for you Smiley
Please can you let me know if that has taken effect?

Re: Increase in upload speed now causing instability (and so lower download speeds)

That looks much better - back to the good old days!  Smiley
The figures are now as follows ...
Upstream 440
Downstream 10678
SNR Upstream 16.4
SNR Downstream 9.6
Line Att (Upstream) 15.2
Line Att (Downstream) 29.0
The downstream figure usually settles down eventually to something around 8-10M.
Hopefully this has resolved the problem.  Many thanks for such a speedy response.

Re: Increase in upload speed now causing instability (and so lower download speeds)

Hi Chris,
Unfortunately, although you put the cap back on our upload speed on Friday (which fixed our problems),  it seems to have been taken off again today.
As a result, after a good weekend, we are now back to frequently losing the connection again today, due to the low SNR figures.
Can someone please put the cap on the upload speed back on?  Do you need to do anything to make sure that the cap stays on?
Thanks.

Re: Increase in upload speed now causing instability (and so lower download speeds)

Hi,
Really sorry about that, leave it with me and I'll ensure that it's capped by the end of the day tomorrow for you.

Re: Increase in upload speed now causing instability (and so lower download speeds)

It looks like the cap on the upstream was put back on early on Tuesday 26th Feb. Things have been good again since.
The figures are now as follows ...
Upstream 444
Downstream 12657
SNR Upstream 30.7
SNR Downstream 6.4
Line Att (Upstream) 15.2
Line Att (Downstream) 29.0
The downstream speed usually settles down at 8-10M after a few days.
Hopefully the cap on the upstream speed will stay on permanently now?
As an aside, I notice that the upstream SNR has been much better since I started this thread. I don't know if anyone has done anything to help that.
But anyway, I am quite happy with the current figures - hopefully things will stay like this now.
Thanks again for your help.

Your upstream will remain at 448kbps, glad to see things are fine at the moment.
Let us know if there's anything else.

Re: Increase in upload speed now causing instability (and so lower download speeds)

My upload speed seems to have been uncapped again and so my connection is falling over all the time this morning. Please can someone cap my upload speed again (to 440?) so I can have a stable connection again?  Many thanks,.

Re: Increase in upload speed now causing instability (and so lower download speeds)

My current stats are:
Upstream 1203
Downstream 11891
SNR Margin(Upstream) 6.1
SNR Margin(Downstream) 6.6
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 15.4
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 29.5
The upstream speed (1203) is too fast for my connection, and as a result the signal to noise ratio is too low and so the link frequently gets disconnected. In the past this eventually brings the downstream speed too low (the downstream link is a bit too fast at the momentl, but that usually stabilises at about 9000 or 10000 so I'm not worried about that). It is the upstream link that is the problem. Plusnet have capped this for me in the past (at about 440) and this stabilises the connection. Can this upstream speed be capped again please?

Re: Increase in upload speed now causing instability (and so lower download speeds)

Hi amigos2,
Sorry your upload has uncapped itself again - really not sure why it keeps doing that!
I've re-placed the order to cap your upstream, should complete tomorrow morning for you.
