Im not going mad. XP SP3 affects wireless capabilities

Hi all
been doing some research
Looks like the new SP3 affects wireless adapters
Here is a quote from a forum and the solution....

Hi
After installing SP3 onto an Acer Aspire 1360 (XP Home SP2) it will no
longer connect to my wireless network. It simply sits there trying to
acquire an IP address but doesn't succeed. It also says the signal
strength is low where it is usually excellent and is trying to connect at
1Mbps. Trying to find networks in range results in the claim there are no
networks in range. Uninstalling SP3 restores normality. The wireless
router is a Belkin with hardware version F5D7231-4 2000. Any ideas?

Here is someones solution

I had the same problem.
Use WEP instead of WPA.

This is the problem i have been experiencing over the last few days

yes indeed - more likely to be a driver problem than needs undating to work with SP3

Re: Im not going mad. XP SP3 affects wireless capabilities

Ok pierre lol
This evening i pushed the reset button the back of my router and uninstalled my wireless dongle
Set the modem up wired to my laptop... no problems.. getting over 6 meg broadband  Smiley
then i went into the wireless settings and selected the WEP option and popped it on channel 2
Disconnected from the ethernet. Then installed the wirless adapter software... Selected the router from a list and then popped in the WEP key
Its now connected fine... No issues
Hopefully when i restart the computer it will work again...
If not its back to the drawing board lol

Re: Im not going mad. XP SP3 affects wireless capabilities

A lot of these problems seem to be the key getting corrupted if you redo the key on t he router and pc it seems to solve most of the problems. It seems as if SP3 doesnt understand the way te key has been stored and corrupts it.
A lot seam to be 3rd party software if you use windows its self for wireless it doesnt seem as bad but most need the OEM software to work so it not an option

Re: Im not going mad. XP SP3 affects wireless capabilities

I've had similar problems recently.  My desktop (and my sons) both  running XP SP3 lose contact with the router, and then sit there trying to acquire an IP address.  If I reset the router, it fixes it (until the next time).
It's only been bad over the last week or so.  Has there been another update recently, that could have caused it?

Re: Im not going mad. XP SP3 affects wireless capabilities

I have just reset my router and am now using WEP encryption instead of WPA and the problem has gone
With WPA everytime i turned my laptop off with the wireless dongle it wouldnt connect again unless i ran through the router set-up everytime
Change your security to WEP and see what happens
Or uninstall SP3 but i havent tried that

OK, but should I have to reduce my wireless encryption to a lower standard, just because M$ won't beta test their updates properly? Angry

Re: Im not going mad. XP SP3 affects wireless capabilities

I agree my friend...
Try ditching SP3 and still use WPA.
I might try this but i dont want to risk losing my connection again... I will probably stick with WEP

Re: Im not going mad. XP SP3 affects wireless capabilities

Hi there
WEP is very unsure and can be hacked in seconds with a few clicks, even novice users can crack WEP by downloading certain programs.
WPA Is much harder to crack. You need to move back to WPA Smiley
