If anyone wants to upgrade their Fibre router...

I thought some of you may be interested in this. Amazon is now selling the TP Link TL-WR2543ND 450Mbps Dual-Band Wireless N Gigabit Router for under £35, delivered. I know many aren't overly happy with the stock router supplied by Plusnet and this is an excellent upgrade. I paid almost double :(.

As this is only for fibre I have edited the title accordingly

Re: If anyone wants to upgrade their router...

Hmm, it has been suggested that this section of the forum is split into Fibre and ADSL to avoid such confusion... Smiley

The router is WAN technology agnostic - it is no more for fibre with a fibre modem than it is for ADSL with an ADSL modem, or for cable with a cable modem for that matter.
Perhaps the subject should be 'If anyone wants to upgrade their modemless router...'!

Picky - no I won't as it would just confuse everybody

Fair enough!  Smiley
I think though that one sometimes has to be picky as otherwise not doing so is often the very cause of confusion!

Good point, I forget people still use ADSL. I'd forgotten about those dark days.  Wink

Seeing as it's picky-day, all routers are modemless.

Re: If anyone wants to upgrade their Fibre router...

No; many have modems inside them.
A router is merely a device that forwards packets between two or more networks. In the case of routers with modems built-in to them these networks would usually be a LAN and a WAN. In the case of that the OP pointed to it is between two wired LANs (with a wireless LAN bridged to one of them) and hence would be unsuitable for connection directly to a WAN without a dedicated modem.

Then it would be a modem/router often referred to as a gateway.

Re: If anyone wants to upgrade their Fibre router...

You're quite right. A modem router is, as the name suggests, a type of router - and indeed merely but one naming definition of the sort. I dread to think how much confusion it causes the common man and how many unsuitable products end up being purchased.

Cheers gareth6.
Ordered one!
Just had fibre installed, and not overly impressed with the technicolor router.

It's ok as a spare though (or a doorstop).  Tongue

[picky]Gateways usually incorporate a switch, (or a hub in some older or cheapo ones), within the housing. Single lan-port routers are rare these days.[/picky]
