IP Profile now stuck at 350kbps - Thanks BT / Plusnet!

So for a few months I have been having disconnection issues. Usually my internet will drop out a few times between the hours of 6 and 8 for no apparent reason. Plusnet suggested that it may be my central heating......ok, right.
So this last week to add insult to injury my IP Profile dropped to 350kbps and has not shifted back up at all.
So now I get to enjoy slightly better than dial up speeds and pay full wack regardless.
I have tried different sockets in the hours and two routers. I have no noise on my line. I have tried different filters etc etc. I have raised a ticket with plusnet support, which they replied to a couple of times but with no information that actually helps.

Apologies if I come across as rather negative in this post. I rely on the internet for work and these recent speed / drop out issues and really getting annoying.

How often do you restart the router? The DLM needs a period with a stable connection before it will increase your IP Profile. How large an increase would you expect based on your router stats - it takes longer for smaller increases?
With regard to the drop outs, have you worked through the troubleshooting process to submit a fault report? Is that what led to the suggestion the cause is internal to your property?

Re: IP Profile now stuck at 350kbps - Thanks BT / Plusnet!

Personally, I never restart my router. The connection drops but that isnt becuase I've powered down the router at all.
I have switched routers tonight to see if its any better. I've gone from my new Belkin to the old Plusnet one.
I suppose submitting a fault report will be my next course of action, but I am reluctant due to the fact that I will be charged if no problems are found (bearing in mind the competence of BT, Im not filled with confidence with them being able to sort my connection)
But I suppose its about time to file a fault report.
I have been through the troubleshooting. I find it hard to believe that a connection that worked fine for 6 months would suddenly flake out due to something in my environment. The house is 6 years old, as is the estate I live in. Its not like it old cabling etc etc.
I have just this second performed a BT speed test. Here are the details:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 289 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :3360 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps
Yesterday my Ip Profile was stuck at 350 kbps.
Seems its gone up but my speed is still pretty bad! Figure that one out Smiley

Re: IP Profile now stuck at 350kbps - Thanks BT / Plusnet!

Ok, thats showing
Phone exchange:
LINCOLN
Estimated line speed:
8Mb (Accurate to within +/- 1Mbit) - Checked on 2009-08-04 01:54:46
Current line speed:
0.35 Mb
Interestingly, the phone number that is shown on that screen is my old number, and the exchange is also out of date.

I am told the wrong number and exchange don't matter - I am not sure I entirely believe it.  Undecided
Anyway the current line speed is supposed to match the new IP profile in about 12 hours and then your speeds will increase

Re: IP Profile now stuck at 350kbps - Thanks BT / Plusnet!

The Member Centre page shows an estimated line speed of 8Mbps for your line (albeit a very old estimate). Is that realistic - the BT test shows a sync speed of only 3360kbps?
It would help us to get a better picture if you post the connection stats from your router (sync speed, attenuation and noise margin).

Re: IP Profile now stuck at 350kbps - Thanks BT / Plusnet!

I think the exchange info may be a little out of date. I moved about 8 months ago and took plusnet with me and those details are my old ones. Not sure where they are being pulled from.
Here are some details from my router:
DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 3,584
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 31.5 / 49.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 16.0 / 11.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / TSTC
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 9 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 3 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 23 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 16
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0

But remember that the "Estimated line speed" is demonstrably inaccurate. Best to ignore it.

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 3,584

A downstream sync speed of 3584 kbps supports a theoretical IP profile of 3000 kbps (source). The actual IP profile may be less for reasons best known to BT!

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 16.0 / 11.5

A downstream noise margin of 11.5 dB is higher than the ideal target of 6 dB, so your sync speed could be higher. Some investigation may be necessary to determine why the noise margin is 11.5 dB. For example see Broadband Speed Faults: How to diagnose?

Hi warpkid,
Just ran a line test and it's now showing 3000k IP profile so I've nudged it up on your account which should take effect at your end in a couple of minutes.

Re: IP Profile now stuck at 350kbps - Thanks BT / Plusnet!

Another quick update.
After being seemingly OK for a few hours this afternoon my connection has slowed to a crawl again. Here are the stats from the router:
Uptime: 0 days, 4:30:31
DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 3,744
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 31.5 / 50.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 16.0 / 12.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / TSTC
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 3 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 1 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 8 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 5,769
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 221
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 204
So it would appear that just this afternoon the noise on my line has increased.
According to internet speed test I have a latency of 1243 ms
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1185963681.png
A download rate of 0.25mbps. This has dropped dramatically from this afternoon.
Before you ask, my computer is the only device connected  to the net at the mo in my house. Nothing is downloading. No p2p or anything like that.
So yeah, my connection is actually getting worse.
Ive done another BT Speed test and the results are as follows:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 1237 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :3744 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 3000 Kbps
So that show's a better download rate compared to speed test. But trust me, general browsing is very slow. WOW ping is 4 seconds.

Ah ok thanks!
Speed has gone 'back to normal' again.
This is totally random!
