I think my router is on it's way out.

Hi,
I think my router is giving up, I'm having random connection drops, usually when the router is under heavy load. I have noticed it whilst playing games like Chivalry, the connection will drop for around ten seconds. It can also drop the connection when I open my browser. It's a thomson TG585 v7, at least three years old. Do I need to phone or can this be sorted through the forums? Thanks

Re: I think my router is on it's way out.

Is it just the connection dropping or does the router reboot/switch off as well?
You don't by any chance have another spare router around (just to rule out a connection problem)?

Re: I think my router is on it's way out.

Hi, it does look fairly intermittent:

I'd recommend doing the checks for a fault first though to see if it is a line issue rather than the router, unless you're sure all those drops were down to what was done on the PC at the time. The checks are at http://faults.plus.net, hope they help.
Alternatively if you can test with an alternative router that'd definitely prove the issue one way or another?

Re: I think my router is on it's way out.

I don't have another router unfortunately.
The router itself doesn't reset, the connection drops. The internet light starts to flash red. It reconnects after ten seconds or so. I will do the checks now. Thanks.
I have plugged my router into the test socket and swapped the filter. I wont know if it has made a difference for a bit, so wont be able to continue with the troubleshooter tonight. Will fire up Chivalry and see what happens.

Re: I think my router is on it's way out.

It made no difference last night.
Going to try once more tonight and see what happens. It's strange, when it started acting up last night (players in online games running into walls, timing out) I checked my router stats and they didn't report a disconnection from the internet. I have tried this fix > http://forums.tripwireinteractive.com/showpost.php?p=516832&postcount=4 but haven't been able to test it yet. I remember having to do this years ago, but have factory reset the router since. Hopefully this will have some effect.
Still wouldn't explain the disconnections I have experienced though.  Huh

Re: I think my router is on it's way out.

My router just this minute lost connection again, the internet light went out and started flashing red again. Will continue with the troubleshooter now.
I have come to the point now that it wants me to try a different router or risk having to pay for the engineer visit, as I haven't got another router I am reluctant to continue with the troubleshooter and possibly waste an engineers time and my money.

No mention of any noise on your phone line, dial 17070 then 2 and listen for a minute, any hissing/crackling and you have a phone line fault which will do what you say has been happening.

No, nothing to do with the phone ringing, the line sounds clear but I will dial that number once I get home from work.
Just dialed 17070 and performed the quiet test, no noise whatsoever. Very quiet.

Re: I think my router is on it's way out.

Well, it'd definitely be worth trying another router, though as it's 3 years old I'm afraid we can't replace it free under guarantee. As you've recontracted recently though and there's more than 12 months to go on the contract we can supply a 582n if you're happy to pay the postage of £5.99?
If you'd rather buy your own that's fine - any ADSL2+ compatible router will work fine for you, but if you would like a new one please let us know and we'll give you a call to take the delivery charge and get it sent out to you.

Sure, it's worth a shot with a new router. If you can arrange the call I will pay the postage no problem. Thanks.

Re: I think my router is on it's way out.

I have to go to work soon, so contacting me on mobile would be the best bet. Unless there is a way you can add the postage onto my next bill?

Re: I think my router is on it's way out.

Hi, thanks for your time on the phone. The router's been ordered and should be with you in a couple of days - hopefully Saturday morning but possibly Monday. Hope it makes a difference, please let us know.
