I hate BT's automatic systems

My connection has been totally stable with fairly low error rate at a 6dB noise margin for months and months.
This morning there was a power cut - planned due to replacement of overhead wires.
After about 7 hours the power came back on.
Checked the router stats - default noise margin is now 12dB
Fortunately with the DG834Gv4 I can tweak it back to a sensible level

Re: I hate BT's automatic systems

I may have to apologise to BT  Embarrassed
Just had a series of resyncs caused by the upstream noise margin (upstream speed dropped to 256kbps) so whatever the electricity board did they managed to mess up the BT wires. They were putting up new poles and replacing wires.
Will need to go out tomorrow and have a look if it doesn't settle down.

Re: I hate BT's automatic systems

Update
-  frequent drops in upstream sync overnight 2nd - 3rd Dec

with horrible upstream stats

and contrast it with 4th - 5th Dec with downstream noise margin tweaked from 15dB default

I have no idea what caused it except for the 7 hour power cut

But only BT staff touch the telephone cables - don't they - not electricity board or their contractors ???.
Around my village - the electricity company are replacing many overhead lines  with underground cables to enhance resilience with the increasing numbers of storms.
And BT staff have been replacing telegraph poles.

Re: I hate BT's automatic systems

Thay were shared poles - that is very common round here. The new poles are electricity only AFAIK
It makes fault checking very difficult as BT need to bring two engineers to check the junction box on the pole

Re: I hate BT's automatic systems

Mand,
Thanks for asking - I think that this answers the question.
The last resync was me modifying the default noise margin to get the ipProfile up from 2500 to 3000 - now I am just waiting for the BT and Plusnet systems to catch up - should happen sometime today
However without a router which allows me to tweak the margin I would be stuck at a sync speed of about 2300kbps

Re: I hate BT's automatic systems

Looks better. Smiley
A 3000 and upstream back to 448 is pretty good for your line isn't it?

Re: I hate BT's automatic systems

Just to add - the BT system finally dropped the default noise margin to 6dB today  Grin
