How long before IP profile is re-calculated?

Results from 15th November:
Quote
    Your DSL connection rate: 7296 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 6000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5623 kbps

Same setup (same router, same filters, same phones, same configuration, same computer) now provides:
Quote
    Your DSL connection rate: 5792 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 750 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 663 kbps

I assume that this is a glitch with BT's profiling. How long before I can expect to get back to reasonable speeds?

Re: How long before IP profile is re-calculated?

Hiya Tony,
Given that there quite a significant difference between the two sync rates, hopefully the profile should pick up fairly quickly.

Re: How long before IP profile is re-calculated?

Hi Tony,
It seems as though you've had a low sync event for some reason and that's resulted in your profile dropping. Providing your connection doesn't drop again your profile should rise within a couple of days. PN's profile at the member centre then has to catch up (could be another 12-24 hrs.).
Given that you current sync speed is somewhat lower than the November figure, I suspect you have some sort of fault problem. Can you post some router ADSL stats (down & upstream).

Re: How long before IP profile is re-calculated?

Hi there Jameseh,
Thank you for the info.
It was slow this morning at 6:30am when I started downloading the Windows 7 Beta - it was getting a steady 75KB/sec,  so would have taken 8 hours to download.
I have written a quick program to re-start the download while I am asleep (starting at  just after 12 midnight) in the hope that it will complete during the free period.
Hi Anotherone,
Thanks for putting a timescale to the problem. The (wireless) router stats are:
[tt]Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 5184 Kbps 448 Kbps
Noise Margin 14.4 dB 19.0 dB
Line Attenuation 20.0 dB 13.0 dB
Output Power 19.8 dBm 11.9 dBm [/tt]

Re: How long before IP profile is re-calculated?

It looks like whatever "event"  triggered the profile change also caused the target SNRM to be set to 15.
That suggests maybe more than one "event"........
(so beware a reoccurrence)
The higher SNRM would probably explain the lower sync speed.
At your attenuation (line length) you should easily get the full 8mbps if all else is "clean".

Re: How long before IP profile is re-calculated?

Hi HPsauce,
I have moved my router from an extension (attic) down to the main socket - very inconvenient as it is in the kitchen with nowhere to put the router.
I am now getting:
[tt]Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 6304 Kbps 448 Kbps
Noise Margin 10.8 dB 22.0 dB
Line Attenuation 19.0 dB 13.0 dB
Output Power 19.7 dBm 11.9 dBm
[/tt]
Is this any better?
I may still have to move the router as it is difficult to keep it balanced on an box in the kitchen.

Re: How long before IP profile is re-calculated?

The magic word "extension"...... Cry
Did you notice that the attenuation changed from 20dB to 19dB.
That's the equivalent to taking 70 metres of your BT line!
(plus noise margin is reduced and speed increased)
What sort of cable is the extension? And is it still plugged in for other purposes?
PS Most routers have some sort of wall mounting brackets, have a look on the back for keyhole cutouts.

Re: How long before IP profile is re-calculated?

Hi again HPsauce,
The extension and the rest of the configuration was the same back in November when I got 5623 kbps throughput.
The extension is just a standard 'bell wire' type and, although not particularly good quality, still allowed me achieve the November figure.
The last set of ADSL stats I posted were obtained with only the wireless router and the phone - both connected to a filter that is plugged into the master socket. I have tried briefly removing the phone but it did not make any appreciable difference to the values.
I'm not sure where to go from here except wait a few days and see if the IP profile improves.
Thanks again for your suggestions and help.

Re: How long before IP profile is re-calculated?

Any phone extension used with broadband needs to be proper CW1308 twisted-pair cable (or better).
Also, only the 2 main cores (2 & 5) should be connected or you pick up loads of interference.
Any plug-in extension lead is almost certainly going to fail those criteria totally.
Not sure what you mean by bell wire but it sounds unlikely to be appropriate.
An extension from kitchen to loft would be a broadband disaster waiting to happen.  Cry

Re: How long before IP profile is re-calculated?

Does anyone have a link to the Plusnet page showing the current PlusNet value for the IP profile? I have just spent half an our going around in circles in the help system trying to find it.
After a router re-start, I am now back up to 5500Kb/sec download speed.
Thanks for your help everybody....

Or log into the member centre
Click Connection Settings on the left-hand navigation menu
Click the High-speed Broadband icon.
