How come so low compared to sync? Contention?

My router is syncing at over 5mb, profiled at 4.5mb, but a download speed test seems to not get over 2mb.  Sometimes lower
Surely there's not that much contention?
I know it's an 'upto' 8mb service, but i'd have thought i'd get somewhere near what my line is capable of.

I only thought to check as I bought the wife a Wii for Chrimbo, and downloading a simple channel on the Wii shop seemed to take forever.  Roll_eyes

Re: How come so low compared to sync? Contention?

Run the BT speed test to see what it says your IP Profile is.
Then go to see what https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed says is you current line speed - it should be the same.
If it isn't ring Plusnet and ask for your current line speed to be set to match your IP Profile (they can do that immediately). Any problems post the results here and one of the Comms team will do it for you.

Re: How come so low compared to sync? Contention?

As mentioned, my (plusnet) profile is 4.5mb
From BT:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 2805 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :5504 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 416 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 4000 Kbps
and my latest at mybroadbandspeed is a whopping 1mb.  I bet it's ok by midnight though  Undecided

Re: How come so low compared to sync? Contention?

Sorry, I assumed you meant the BT Profile - we've seen a lot of cases recently where the PN profile gets stuck at 2000.
Having the Plusnet Profile higher than BT can cause some minor problems but I wouldn't think it would be as much as you are seeing!
Have you checked your exchange status?

Re: How come so low compared to sync? Contention?

There's a target noise margin for upload as well as download. If the line isn't good enough the upload will sync at a lower speed.

Re: How come so low compared to sync? Contention?

Exactly, but the download is syncing at 5.5 mbps so upload should have a huge margin in normal circumstances.
I think it stinks of something very strange if it's still the same (or worse)......

Re: How come so low compared to sync? Contention?

Upload is on a different set of frequencies - it could be a problem which affects those more than the download frequencies.

Re: How come so low compared to sync? Contention?

That's what I was thinking.
And if it affects uploads significantly then it can mess up download tests as there's always an acknowledgement to every block of data.
Tone graph would be interesting methinks.
