High ping

Over the past month or so the ping on my broadband has been so high it has become impossible to play any online games. It wasn't a problem last year so I'm wondering what has changed?? If anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be great as Titanfall is sat on my shelf waiting for a decent next connection!!

Re: High ping

Hmm slightly down on what speeds you'd be expecting. Is your console connected via wire or wireless and same for the speedtest wired or wireless?  Can you go to http://usertools.plus.net/@gateway and tell us what gateway you're on?

Re: High ping

You are currently connected to gateway ptn-ag03.
This is located in Telehouse North.
Console and speedtest were/are on a wired connection

Re: High ping

In case it helps, I've set up a broadband quality monitor on thinkbroadband.com to keep an eye on the connection (well, once I set the router to respond to ping requests :-[)

Re: High ping

Hi rpiggott,
I'm sorry to hear of the issues you're experiencing with high pings.
Was you using any other traffic at the time you got this?

Re: High ping

Hi Chris,
I wasn't deliberately using any other traffic when I ran the tests - other desktop pc and laptops were turned off however my iphone and a media server may be connecting.
I can re-run the test later when I get home and unplug everything except the laptop I'm using to run the tests.

Re: High ping

Hi Rob,
That'd be great if you could, just so we can see where we're at with these graphs and we know exactly what traffic is being used.

Re: High ping

Will do Chris,
I rang the OH and got her to turn the media server off just after 11am which looks like it might have had an impact on the latency unless you guys did something around the same time?

Re: High ping

Ok. I've disconnected everything tonight and disabled all wireless devices.

Re: High ping

What exchange are you on? From your TBB graph it looks like peak time congestion.

Re: High ping

Brian, do you mean my local exchange? If so, information is below;
Overton-on-Dee
Code: WNOOD
County: Clwyd
Enabled: 05 Jan 2005
Market: 1
Mkt2014: A
From the TBB graph, it looks like my media server is causing the latency issues. It's only configured to act as an itunes/media server and I haven't changed the config since last year when it was all working fine... Hopefully I can get some time to look at the network settings tonight and see if there are any issues.

Re: High ping

I've just taken a look over your account following a brief period to allow your connection time to settle down.
On the graph the high latency looks to be caused by a large amount of use on your upstream, not sure if that's the Media Server doing this?
If there is a night when you don't plan on using the connection, I'd be interested to see how the TBB Graph differs without any see on it at all (perhaps for an hour or two).

Re: High ping

@ rpiggott - yes, that's what I wanted to see.
No exchange congestion, presuming http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/?exchange=Overton-on-Dee&exact=4543&plugin=vp is up-to-date.
Not looking good for faster broadband for a while either - http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/WNOOD
Only serves 710 premises according to SamKnows, though...
Something to consider for all those suffering from more congestion than usual this week - School Holidays...  Cool

Re: High ping

Looks like you are maxing your upload with that media server.  Is there any settings to restrict its upload rate?  I'd set it to something like 0.25Mbps?
