High Broadband Usage - How to monitor

In the past couple of months my broadband usage has more than doubled, taking me over my allowance every month.  Whilst my son is playing his playstation online more I am surprised if this the only cause of the increase.  I have also signed up to Sky Anytime+ but haven't downloaded or watched anything from it this month
The PlusNet usage monitor shows that for the current month the usage breakdown as follows:
Web 17%
Gaming 5%
Streaming 33%
I know that you can install monitors on individual computers but not sure how to do this for the other internet access devices we have in the household.  Do any of you know a way that I can monitor all the usage on every device we have currently:
4 laptops
2 smartphones
1 playstation
Sky+ Anytime
Or are PlusNet able to give me any more detail on my usage.
Many thanks for any assistance you can provide
Jane

Networx at http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/ can be installed on your PC and  configured to monitor the router traffic which should include all connected devices.

Re: High Broadband Usage - How to monitor

The only things I can think of are:
Is your son downloading demos on his PS3? (I assume 3!), as they can easily be a few Gb each. Game patches can be quite hefty too.
Also, does Sky Anytime+ download stuff even when you're not using it? I'm not sure .. I've got a Sky box but not tried using Anytime+.

are PlusNet able to give me any more detail on my usage.

We couldn't tell you what kind of usage it was any more than you can see from the breakdown. We can, however, break it down hourly into upload and download for certain days should you require it.

Re: High Broadband Usage - How to monitor

Many thanks for the quick replies.
I will have a look at the usage monitor suggested and have posted something on the Sky Forum regarding Anytime+.
JoJo, if it would be possible to provide the upload and download usage for the following days that would be great as these are the highest usage for this month:
Saturday 28 April
Tuesday 1 May
Hopefully I can then find out who/what is responsible

Doesn't it use Kontiki ?  if so that could well be the cause of the increased usage

Re: High Broadband Usage - How to monitor

I have been connected to Sky+ for two weeks or so ,I have not seen any download increase apart from the two films I downloaded.
Sky anytime+ shows very clearly the size of the download,in addition my PIN is required when requesting download.
Though you need to be aware some downloads are free films whilst others are for paid for films.

Re: High Broadband Usage - How to monitor

Oh I see - I wasn't sure if it was like Anytime, where it still saves stuff to the HD that you might be interested in, but didn't ask it to. My Sky box is a bit of a way from my router, so haven't bothered to plug it in.
Though I could use the Ethernet power adapters I have, rather than them gather dust in my drawer Smiley

Re: High Broadband Usage - How to monitor

Sorry to hijack the topic, I installed networx to see why I keep going over my limit each month.
Since 5pm I've transferred 1.5GB data and I'm hardly using it.  I downloaded a couple of programs (avg, a thunderbird update), did a bit of surfing, Mrs SiMania did a bit of surfing and facebooking, twitter.
No P2P, no streaming yet it's hitting 300MB+ data transfer per hour.
Devices connected are a couple of iphones, imac, macbook, 2 windows PCs and Apple TV, only one or 3 are used simultaneously .
VMBU hasn't been updated tonight so I don't know how traffic is being classified.
Router is a 3COM 3CRWDR101A-75.
Any idea what could be causing so much usage?
Are there any other programs that can use the SNMP service on the router to find out where the traffic is coming from on my network?
