Hi Folks,
anyone out there help a Newbie configure a Cisco 857W router to work with ADSL broadband in the UK? I have the Cisco configuration guide, but it's very USA-oriented with no examples of a typical UK ADSL setup.
I'd be most grateful for all and any contributions.
Cheers,
John M.

Hi @JohnM16,
Thank you for getting in touch.
Firstly, I would recommend factory resetting the router. This is just so that you have the default settings with no advanced configurations.
Below are the settings needed for ADSL broadband.
Broadband username or login name: yourusername@plusdsl.net
Connection type or encapsulation: 'PPPoA' or 'PPP over ATM'
Password: The password you use to log in to the Member Centre
Virtual Path Identifier (VPI): 0
Virtual Channel Identifier (VCI): 38
Multiplexing method: 'VC Based' or 'VCMUX' or 'VC-Multiplexing'
You should be able to find the manual by googling 'Cisco 857W manual' and if you can find it, use the set up wizard.
Hope this helps.

Hi Jubby,
I appreciate the contribution, but this isn't a 'settings' question, it's a programming question.
So far as I know, the Cisco 857 has to be programmed to recognise an ADSL+ line, and there's no wizard that I know about.
Thanks anyway,
John

I have had a look around the Internet and come to the conclusion that this is an old, obsolete, and slow device no longer supported by Cisco. Personally I wouldn't consider trying to use one. There are far better modern (and therefore probably lower power and more secure) devices around for not much money.

Hi Baldrick,
like Netgear maybe? I've got 2 Netgear N750 routers. Fairly modern, fairly fast, totally unreliable. Useless eastern junk.
Because the Cisco is programmable, it can be as secure as you make it. I just need someone who has done it before. I would much sooner have a reliable router than a fast one.
I don't know any cheap fast configurable routers that don't have issues of one sort or another.
Maybe you could recommend one?
Cheers
John

Hi Mook,
it might be: lots to read and digest, and thanks for spotting it.
Cheers
