Help with WEIRD fault anyone?

I have spent quite a time being helped by Plusnet staff on the helpline but I still have a very weird fault.
I am sitting at my PC, browsing. My Squeezebox Touch is playing "Beyond the Beat Generation" via mysqueezebox.com, and I am uploading a largish sound file to Mediafire.
Suddenly my browser is unable to fetch a website, but the Touch keeps playing and the file keeps uploading. I open a command window ( I have learned something from the help guys). I ping 8.8.8.8 (whatever that is and I lose no packets. I ping bbc.co.uk and the host cannot be found, (but the Touch keeps playing and the file keeps uploading.)
I login to my router (Technicolour TG582n) which tells me I am connected. I manually disconnect, then re-connect, and I am suddenly able to fetch the website I wanted.
The Squeezebox doesn't have to be playing and I don't have to be uploading files, I just mention those things because it seems they show I can be connected and disconnected at the same time.
This is happening at least once a day. Has anyone any ideas on what's wrong and what's to be done?
(p.s. I have done all the tests involving connecting the router to the test socket, and connecting a laptop by LAN cable. There's nothing amiss with my domestic wiring.)

Re: Help with WEIRD fault anyone?

At a guess, you are losing touch with your DNS server.  If that happened existing connections would keep going but new ones would fail.  You would be able to ping web sites on the internet by IP address but not by URL.  What does ipconfig run from a CMD window tell you your DNS server is?

Re: Help with WEIRD fault anyone?

What do you get if you do ipconfig /all if whichever version of windows you run has that option? This does sound like a DNS problem.
Also check Which Gateway am I on when you have the problem and after you've Gateway hopped (Disconnect/Connect) check it again. Make a note each time to see if there is a pattern. Also make a note of your IP address before and after, again looking for patterns. If you need to post any information with that, replace the last 2/3 digits of the address with xxx.

Re: Help with WEIRD fault anyone?

When I run ipconfig/all I get a lot more.... I don't know how to copy and paste the contents of a command window, and there's too much for MWSnap. Could you point to a specific part of the response that would be relevant? Is there a course of action which might prevent this happening?
I will try Which Gateway next time I have the problem.
Thanks for your response

Re: Help with WEIRD fault anyone?

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: if you have it might be the bit.
But copy and paste the lot as follows, it's tricky until you've got the knack!
In the CMD window Right Click - Select All will include stuff that's scrolled off the top of the window, select Mark if you only want some. Now don't click anything else until you got the cursor at the extreme LHS of any area that you want to copy. Then left click and hold it down and drag the cursor to the extreme RHS bottom of the area to be copied. Release the LH button when you have the correct area highlighted.
Whether you used Select All or Mark to highlight, now just do a single right click - you won't see anything this time but note how the title of the CMD window changes during the whole process. Again don't click anything again until you are in the post window, then Right Click and select Paste.
HTH.

Re: Help with WEIRD fault anyone?

Try running command prompt as admin and typing these 2 lines in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
netsh winsock reset catalog
then restart PC

Re: Help with WEIRD fault anyone?

When I right click on the command window logo I don't see an option to run as admin. I am using Windows 7 (32 bit)

Re: Help with WEIRD fault anyone?

Try it on the account you're currently logged on as, if it has admin privileges.
If you get a "needs elevation" message you have to run it as admin. I'm on w7 64 bit so can't speak for 32 bit.

Re: Help with WEIRD fault anyone?

I get the "needs elevation" response.
However I still can't see how to do that.
Right clicking the command window's logo doesn't provide the option.
Can you tell me what is the purpose of your suggestion?

Re: Help with WEIRD fault anyone?

You said you can ping with no packet loss so the netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt command should reset tcp/ip to default. This _should_ sort the problem out.
netsh winsock reset catalog resolves any socket errors you might have.

If you go to start and type in cmd in the search bar , right click on it and the second option down  should be Run as administrator.  If that's not there I've no idea how you'd do it.

OK, found how to run cmd as admin.
Carried out your suggestion and restarted.
Many thanks for your help. I hope the problem is resolved.

Re: Help with WEIRD fault anyone?

If after all that, you still have a problem, try logging into the 582n and turning off IPv6.
