Hi there. Have been fairly unhappy with my Thomson ADSL modem router that came with my Plusnet account. I have bitten the bullet and my brand new ASUS RT-N66U router has arrived! Can anyone walk me through setting it up? I guess I need to do the following:
1. disable the routing and wireless element of the Thomson (can;t figure out where to do this in the admin portal)
2. connect asus router internet port to any of the thomson modem ports
Is that right?
Many thanks in advance!

Hi,
Your post does not say why / what aspect of the Thompson router you are dissatisfied with, I'm guessing th WiFi? Knowledge of what you want to achieve dictates the changes which need to be made / how you configure the sub-nets. For starters, to turn off the wifi, logon to the router, goto home network / interfaces / wireless - click configure in top right and then untick interface enabled and click apply.
You need to think about where you want to control DHCP pools and access controls.
Personally I'd have replaced the Thompson with this from the ASUS range - http://uk.asus.com/Networks/ADSL_Modem_Routers/DSLN55U_Annex_A/ - thereby leaving you only one device to configure. If you want to change your mind, you could try asking your supplier to do a "mistake exchange" (you wanted an ADSL router, but unfortunately picked a cable one).
HTH

You can change the TG582N to 'bridge' modem mode. I think this thread describes how to do it using Telnet.
http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,112320.0.html/
Note that you will lose the ability to monitor the ADSL line stats.
Then you need to set up the Asus for PPPoE connection. A screenshot can be seen here which may be useful.

tip: log into the TG582N and disconnect the session before you start making the above changes. Otherwise, allow up to 10 minutes for the Asus to successfully log into the Plusnet network following a change of router.
Otherwise, unless you are planning to upgrade to fibre soon, I too would suggest you consider returning the Asus cable router and buy an alternative combined ADSL modem/router.
