Re: Help me boost my speed :)

Right, I've been tied up for the last few days but now I'm back on the case.
Here are my stats prior to doing the "Graceful Disconnect" followed by a reconnect at the Test Socket using Ethernet cable to connect the laptop to the router.
Laptop connected to Extension socket in Lounge using Wireless

Download speed achieved during the test was - 7.47 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds  is 2 Mbps-7.15 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 8.08 Mbps

Also, for completeness, I thought I'd do another set with my laptop connected to the router via Ethernet cable.

The pictures of the wiring behind the master socket are attached. This was as wide as I felt safe to open the master socket. The wiring felt stiff and I didn't want to risk pulling anything out from it's connections. I'm afraid removing wires from their terminals is going to be beyond this old boy's fingers. I think it's a job for a telephone engineer. Do you have any idea how much this would cost?

Re: Help me boost my speed :)

Hi there, well I can understand that you didn't want to fiddle more if your fingers weren't nimble enough. A private engineer could be costly, upwards of £50/60 at a guess, and frankly I wouldn't bother at that price especially as (unless you can get a personal recommendation), there are too many out there that claim to know what they are doing, but in fact are not that clued up.
Do you not have a trustworthy relative with DIY skills and nimble fingers? I'll send you a PM anyway with some further thoughts.
Onto the Stats. Just so that you know, connection via Ethernet won't make any difference to the stats themselves. It can/will make a difference to speedtest results (and only when all profiles are updated to the correct value for the stats).
Now the nitty-gritty. The clue to potential improvements is in the stats from the Test socket. The Sync speed down (Bandwidth down) is 15521Kbps which would give a profile of about 13.7Mbps, so you might get throughput speeds around 13Mbps.
However, as you noted, the errors. My first reaction was to the first lot of stats at the test socket - 8 CRC errors in 41 secs, next stats 42 CRC errors in almost 21 minutes (as well as FEC errors climbing). But then I noticed no ES errors (Errored Seconds), that can't be when there are CRC errors. So, whilst the ageing 585 is still working, I'm wondering if it's on it's last legs. The CRC errors back at the lounge are marginally better, and when I looked at the first stats you posted a similar story with the CRC errors being better but only 1 ES Huh
I wouldn't consider Plusnet's latest modem/router the 2704N (without maybe some considerable thought) it has very poor diagnostic capability - again I'll include some thoughts in a PM.  Stay as you are for the moment.

Would it be worth getting a BT/Openreach engineer and giving him/her the brief to review and replace telecoms wiring and sockets in order to provide a faster/more stable broadband service? It may be pricey but I tend to look at things like this the same way I treat domestic electricity consumer units/electricity wiring/heating boilers/PCs/Washing machines et al, that is it eventually wears out and needs replacing?

Unfortunately not.

I have a brand new Technicolor TG582n sitting in it's box it was delivered in. I got Plusnet to send me one for free a year ago when I negotiated my one year contract renewal. Do you think I should install it? If you think purchasing a better router is best then just say so.
Thanks again for your help.

Re: Help me boost my speed :)

Oh yes please to the TG582n Smiley  But do it in daylight hours (not dusk to dawn), don't forget to use the "Graceful Disconnect" method explained in reply #11.
First try it in you test socket and grab some stats to post, and then in your normal location and grab the stats to post.
Just for your own curiosity, whilst you are in the test socket, see what your wireless is like in the lounge with the 582n and see if it performs any better than your 585.
I haven't sent you that promised PM yet, but I will do and address a couple of things for you.
PS.You will find the 582n full DSL stats in a similar location to the 585 but there's a link in my sig. When connected, click the link and log in, hey presto stats page ;
PPS. That wiring won't wear out, it's just that the bell-wire is connected and there's obviously 3 (lots of) sockets connected looking at the wire count. The bell-wire acts as an aerial for interference as it connects to only one of the balanced line pair via the bell capacitor causing an imbalance at frequencies used by DSL. Blocks of flats are electrically/electronically  noisy places at the best of times. I have several ideas up my sleeve which I'll mention in the PM.
