These pages need to be looked at very seriously as they would be very confusing to a newby techie. It states that no authorisation is needed for plusnet's smtp server. Just try using it without authorisation, No mention of imap or the address of the imap server. The outlook configuration pages is very much out of date.

You don't need authentication for the outgoing SMTP relay if you are using it from a PN line.
Which pages are out of date (provide links if possible)
Most of the stuff relating to email is relatively new/up to date AFAIK.

IMAP is mentioned, along with server address, on this page (scroll down a bit) in e-mail help and on the settings page.
BTW, IMAP server is imap.plus.net
