Getting packet loss today

have not got any evidence to back this up but generally at certain times today the connection has been very bad, online gaming unplayable. I think there is packet loss somewhere can anyone at plusnet check my line stats?

Re: Getting packet loss today

Have you tried moving to a different gateway?
You can identify your present gateway here:
http://usertools.plus.net/@gateway/
In the router click on disconnect > wait about 20 seconds > click on connect.
Once you're reconnected use the gateway checker again to prove you're on a new GW.

Re: Getting packet loss today

You could set yourself a ping graph up http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping
That will show the packet loss from an external source, you will also need to allow ping from Wan in your router to make it work, just make sure you keep the same ip while testing!

Re: Getting packet loss today

I can't see anything from the testing we can do that would suggest an issue on your line.
If you could set up a TBB Graph as explained above, that would be handy.

Re: Getting packet loss today

I tried to setup a TBB graph but I dont think my router is letting it recieve ping requests and I dont know how to fix that. I use a Thomson Speedtouch 585 router.

Re: Getting packet loss today

You'll need to enable Telnet on your computer, how you do this depends on the operating system you're using.
Here are the following commands that you'll need via telnet:
telnet 192.168.1.254

You'll need to enter your router username and password details at this point.
service system modify name=PING_RESPONDER state=enabled

saveall

exit

Re: Getting packet loss today

still does not work Chris, the graphs shows up as red meaning 100% packet loss.
In telnet after i put the "enabled" state it wont let me saveall, instead the command line changes to [log] = *blank* and when i type saveall it says [illegal value [saveall] for boolean type.
?

Re: Getting packet loss today

Ah 😕
I'm not 100% on those routers unfortunately, I thought they'd be fairly similar to the Thomson/Technicolor routers.
What sort of issues do you have when gaming? Lagging? Rubber banding?

Re: Getting packet loss today

rubber banding/lag mainly. the thing is it is not all the time just sometimes the connection would have a funny 5 minutes. I run a ping to bbc in the background to rule out connectivity to the game server and the day before last i would get lots of ping timeouts and yesterday was more lag spikes. IIRC I had a similar issue with my old isp (AAISP) a few years ago and what they did was a lift and shift at my exchange and the connection worked fine from then onwards.

Hi jamman,
Found a guide that guides you through enabling WAN ping via the web interface. Give it a go and let us know how you get on.

Re: Getting packet loss today

Here is a graph of the last 22 hours or so
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/611804329944b4047f0ef6fd1249f7d9-31-07-2014.html
Not as bad as it was during the previous couple of days but I did have some issues last night while gaming as you can see from the red on the graph.
