Full Router Settings?

I joined PlusNet last week, using a Draytec Vigor 2800 router.
The PlusNet Connection Settings web page says the following:
Broadband Username/Login name username@plusdsl.net
Connection Type / Encapsulation PPPoA /PPP over ATM
Password The password you use to log in to this website
Virtual Path Identifier (VPI) 0
Virtual Channel Identifier (VCI) 38
Multiplexing method VC Based / VCMUX / VC-Multiplexing

However, my router has additional settings, in particular:
Modulation Mode:
T.1413
G.Lite
G.DMT
ADSL2 Auto(G.992.3)
ADSL2 annex M
ADSL2+ Auto(G.992.5)
ADSL2+ annex M
Multimode

When setting up my router I found that G.DMT worked, so I left it alone. However, I think that this setting may not be optimum.
In addition, I'm getting a new DrayTek Vigor 2710 router in the next few days, and this supports:
ANSI T1.413 Issue2
ITU-T G.992.1 G.dmt (ADSL)
ITU-T G.992.2 G.lite
ITU-T G.992.3 ADSL2
ITU-T G.992.5 ADSL2+
Annex L (READSL)
Annex M

What is the optimum setting for PlusNet, and what effect will changing it have on Dynamic Line Management?

HI nigelmercier,
G.DMT or G992.1 is appropriate for your 20cn connection.

Hi Jojo,
Could you explain the difference?
Also, despite using the DNS settings below:
Primary DNS:  212.159.13.49
Secondary DNS:  212.159.13.50
my router ends up with:
Primary DNS:  212.159.6.9
Secondary DNS:  212.159.6.10
What is going on here?

Re: Full Router Settings?

One is spelt G, D, M, T and the other is G, 9, 9, 2, 1 Grin Apart from that they are the same (it's just different names for the same standard).
All four of the DNS IP addresses point to the same set of load balanced servers so there is nothing to worry about there either.

I'm sure I read somewhere on this forum to use G.992.5 - is this not the case?

Re: Full Router Settings?

That is correct if you are on 21CN - ADSL 2+
According to Jojo's post you are still on 20CN.

Re: Full Router Settings?

Hi Jojo,
So this is related to my BT exchange? Any idea when it will go 21CN?

HI nigelmercier,
Yes, this is the equipment that is set up at the exchange. Your exchange does not show a date for upgrade to 21cn I'm afraid.

Re: Full Router Settings?

Jojo,
Could I suggest that recommended modulation settings (in order of preference) be added to the connection details page please?
I stumbled across these settings on my modem and found that some give 10%+ better synch speed than others... which on a very slow line (due to grotty BT copper cables) ris eally worth the difference!!
I have the options:-
Quote
  MMODE
  T1413
  GDMT
  GLITE
  ADSL2
  ADSL2Plus

MMODE & GLITE give me about 1200 kbs, T1413 & GDMT give me a stonking 1376kbs.  On MMODE this can sink down to 120kbs.  Having found this thread and changed to GDMT I'll now wait to see what (if any) decay I get with the different modulation.

Re: Full Router Settings?

MMODE=mutlimode which mean that it will use the most appropriate modulation. If you are on 20CN it should have used GDMT, does you modem report back the actual used modulation?

Re: Full Router Settings?

As far as I know the router should select the most appropriate.

Re: Full Router Settings?

itsme & Jojo,
Thank you for the information.
Now that I understand what MMODE does, I've set it back to that and bounced the link.  I was somewhat happy to see the link still reporting 1376 this morning... but even happier to see it bounce up to 1408 after the change which is surprising given that the modulation type has not changed.  I've also found the report page for the modulation - it shows GDMT.  Therefore it seems starnge that yesterday it persistently reported a lower spedd  on MMODE.  Now I know what I'm looking for I'll keep an eye on the auto selected modultaion type.
Note to Jojo - Just in case you were tempted to go digging, reference to line speed is not in respect of the account linked to this forum identity, but in respect to the IP address of this posting.

I don't know if JoJo can see the IP address you posted from as this facility is normally only available to moderators,
