Free Usage figure although PC turned off

Hello can anyone please help. When viewing the usage figures I am getting a constant free usage of around 370kb approx but the pc is turned off do you know what that may be ?

Re: Free Usage figure although PC turned off

Normally its just Internet Noise... port scans, connection attempts, other infected PCs trying to infect yours etc, stale P2P sessions where the other party is still trying to connect to your bittorrent client. etc etc.
You don't say if you have a router or USB modem... i.e. is the router also switched off or left on or the USB ADSL modem powered off when the PC is?

thanks for the reply
its the dlink wireless modem router supplied by plusnet so it is turned on all the time. Also Microsoft auto updates is turned on as is Norton would that have anything to do with it even if the machine is off.

If your router is on then it will be internet noise and nothing to worry about.

Re: Free Usage figure although PC turned off

As others have said, it's just background noise and nothing to worry about.
To put things in perspective about how little data it actually is:
1GB = 1000MB = 1000kB (using PN's measure)
therfore 1GB = 1,000,000kB
If you're using 370kB/day it would take 1,000,000/370 = 2702.7 days (almost 7.5 years) to use 1GB (which is the amount of data transfer allowed per month on PN's cheapest package!).
This "noise" is present whenever you are connected - it's just that your surfing etc. during the day drowns it out as it's insignificant.

Perhaps worth looking at the Plusnet Broadband Firewall settings to reduce this traffic?

Re: Free Usage figure although PC turned off

I wouldnt bother worrying - 370k is bugger all
mine can do MB's when my PC's off and routers on just by people trying to connect to my IP on P2P even though its offline
