Fibre upgrade from 40/20 to 80/40 - my progress

I thought I might document the progress of the upgrade here, as a help to anyone else thinking of going through the same process.  I have been using Speedtest.net to check speeds.
12th October  -  Noticed my upload speed had increased to 15.9Mbps.  Download 28.17Mbps.  This is about normal for 11:45pm.
14th October  -  11:30am.  No change so far.  28.98/15.84
15th October 4:43pm  -  Blimey!  73.96/15.52!  I take a screenshot and boast to all my friends on 2Mbps ADSL.
15th October 7:06pm  -  Ah. Reality Check.  22.69/15.63
7:09pm  -  7.20/15.49
From here onwards the internet becomes unusable.  Pings and tracerts work fine but web pages timeout.  Obviously my line is still being trained.  I accept this because I know when things have settled down I should at least get the same speed as I had before.

Re: Fibre upgrade from 40/20 to 80/40 - my progress

16 October 5:39am - 34/50/8.73
5:40am - 1 minute later and the speedtest says 71.65/15.73
8:49am - 2.63/15.8
8:40am - 11.72/9.47

PN say the speed will fluctuate within the first 10 days as things settle down, so I guess that's what's happening here and this behaviour is normal.  At least the connection is still perfectly usable, so I'll just continue to watch progress.
9:33am - 72.29/9.71

Hi lorisarvendu,
For the first few days it may fluctuate.
Are you using wired or a wireless connection? Your certainly hitting top speeds at certain points.
I'd also suggest to try running a few speed tests as http://speedtester.bt.com

Re: Fibre upgrade from 40/20 to 80/40 - my progress

Hi Chris
I'm totally wired (lol).
Yeah, I've tried the BT Speedtester but for the past 2 days all it's said is Error Try Again Later.
I'm absolutely fine with the fluctuating speeds, as from what I've read on the forum it's normal procedure.  I just thought it might be helpful to document it.
72 was a pleasant surprise I must admit, because PN had estimated 63.  I guess I must be closer to the green box than I thought.  Though a BT guy did tell me that there's a lot of aluminium between the cabinet and our estate.

Cheers for the info Dave,
I'd try it over the next few days and see how it performs.
Keep me updated.

Re: Fibre upgrade from 40/20 to 80/40 - my progress

16 October 2:04pmWell this is weird.  Something I've never noticed before (unless my speeds are changing every second).  I get different results from Speedtest.net depending on whether I run it from a Windows XP machine or a Linux machine.
Here's the Windows result:

Here's the Linux result:

Both tests were run within a minute of eachother, from different machines that are nonetheless plugged into the same network switch.  I've just re-run the Linux one and got the same result, so it must be to do with the way each OS treats the network connection.  The BT Test page still gives me an error, crapping out halfway through the upstream test.

Have you optimised RWIN?

No I haven't ever optimised RWIN.  But then I've never optimised it on linux either.
Having said that, now I have. From 64512 to 1022208.  Which now gives me this on Windows:.

I need to look into this more...
Thanks for the HU!

Jelv you are awesome dude!
I use Getright as a downloader for large files, and I've never been able to get more than 340kbps per thread. Am just trying a test file and it's coming down at over 3Mbps...and if I use multiple threads I can max it out at 5.8!

Re: Fibre upgrade from 40/20 to 80/40 - my progress

17th October 6:27am (BST)

Funny little blip about 5:30.  Part of the training I guess.

I'm also guessing some form of interleaving has been applied to my connection, as the minimum latency has gone up, but those red indicators of packet loss have vanished.
0904am

I'm fairly certain that after 3 days my connection is now stablising.

It looks like it is settling down, continue to monitor and let me know how you're getting on.

Thanks Chris
Am I right about interleaving being applied at around 5:30 this morning?

Re: Fibre upgrade from 40/20 to 80/40 - my progress

Interleaving is currently on, it looks like it was aroung 5.30 this morning. It's also on the lowest level possible at the moment as there are three different levels.

Re: Fibre upgrade from 40/20 to 80/40 - my progress

18th October 08:39am (BST)

5 days after upgrade and it looks like PN's original estimate of 63.5 wasn't that far from the eventual truth.

Re: Fibre upgrade from 40/20 to 80/40 - my progress

19th October 05:56 BST

So 6 days later I've had a few fluctuations and it looks like I'm now interleaved, but the speed is stable and has settled down to approximately twice what I was getting before.
Which is nice.
