Fibre speed varying again,,,,again.

I have been on unlimited fibre for a few months.
My speed is usually very good at 73 ish.
Periodically (at least when I measure it, which if quite often) it varies.  Tonight, after what appeared weeks of 73ish) it is between 34 and 70, even on consecutive tests.  And downloading an iso, the speed was varying by a factor of two - could be the providing site of course.
I raised a ticket a while back.  PN monitored the line for a few days and concluded everything was fine.
Should I expect the BT wholesale speed test to give such variable results.  Am I merely measuring contention/sharing/inadequate capacity.
All test are wired.

Re: Fibre speed varying again,,,,again.

Hi fp,
It looks like your connection has been down for some extended periods during the day.

Is this anything you're aware of? i.e are you disconnecting delibarately? Would advise against that if you are.
Let me know either way so we can take things from there.

Re: Fibre speed varying again,,,,again.

I leave the BT modem switched on.
But turn the technicolor router off, when not needed.
(I thought from previous conversations this was acceptable - it being more important to leave the BT modem on.).

Re: Fibre speed varying again,,,,again.

Hi,
Not quite as the router manages the connection via the modem.
If you log into the router first then click the option to disconnect before powering off that should avoid DLM (dynamic line management) having adverse affects on speeds.
If you need any advice on how to do what I've mentioned just let us know.

Thanks - I did not know this.
I guess to disconnect the router it is:
logon -> broadband connection -> internet : press disconnect button

Re: Fibre speed varying again,,,,again.

Yes, fp, that's right.
Moving forward it may take some time for your speed to stabalize again if DLM has indeed kicked in due to the frequent disconnections. Let us know how you get on. Smiley

Re: Fibre speed varying again,,,,again.

The router (and BT modem) have been left on.
The pattern seems to be: 73ish except in the evenings when it varies between 30ish and 73ish; and varies between successive tests.
Am I just measuring the effect of contention at peak times?
All tests wired. BT wholesale speedtester mostly plus thinkbroadband tester and Ookla.
EDIT: 22:20 and I seem to be consistently around 20 - 40 Mbps.  Poor.
EDIT 06:30 back to consistent 73 Mbps

Re: Fibre speed varying again,,,,again.

Hi fp,
Sorry for any confusion on my part here, I've just had a word with Adam about this.
A slight correction, your router can be powered off at any time without it affecting your speeds. With FTTC, the speeds are dictated by the uptime and error count at the Openreach Modem. As FTTC doesn't look at PPP session drops as part of this process, switching your router off should be absolutely fine.
If you're on ADSL, then the above responses do absolutely apply.
If your speeds drop again, can you please visit http://speedtest.btwholesale.com and run the initial Speed Test then click 'Further Diagnostics' and run the further test. Once complete, please provide a screenshot of your results on this thread and we'll investigate further.

Re: Fibre speed varying again,,,,again.

I appreciate you don't have a Static IP but if you can keep your connection, could you please set up a TBB Graph so we can monitor?

Re: Fibre speed varying again,,,,again.

I think I have done what you ask - picture attached.
What do you need me to do: leave the router for a few days and then post the picture?
Speeds currently good at 73
Everything wired.

Re: Fibre speed varying again,,,,again.

Oops - thanks.  Since the one attached seems to be for my IP and is all red and I am getting 73 Mbps at the moment, I guess something is not setup correctly.
OK I have enabled ping 🙂
