Fibre speed, gradual decline over time

Have had fibre for 2+ years now. Started out getting up in the 30+ Mb area for downloads (9Mb for uploads). Am now down to around 14-15Mb for downloads (still 9Mb for uploads).
Are we to expect such deterioration over time as more move to fibre?
Is there something on the line that needs reconfiguring?

Re: Fibre speed, gradual decline over time

Hi persistability,
After checking your account I can see your speed profile is set as it should be so you shouldn't be seeing speeds in the ranges you mention. Would it be possible for you to complete the testing outlined here for FTTC Speed Faults (EPP) and drop the details of your findings into another post and we can have a look at this issue for you.
Thanks,
Adam C

Re: Fibre speed, gradual decline over time

Thanks for your fast reply Adam.
After turning off router + Openreach fibre box for 1 min and reboot then doing that BT performance test I get
Download Speed : 21.24
Upload Speed : 8.66
Ping Latency : 20.88
Then I did the "further diagnostics" and got the same with
"For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 20 Mbps-38.71 Mbps ."
"We were unable to identify any performance problem with your service at this time."

After then going to speedtest.net and doing theirs I now get
23Mb download and 9Mb upload.
So some improvement definitely, and barely within BTs "acceptable" range. Still nowhere near what it used to be. Is this to be expected? and if so why?

Re: Fibre speed, gradual decline over time

Download : IP Profile for your line is - 38.71 Mbps
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 10 Mbps

Re: Fibre speed, gradual decline over time

Removed a powerline adapter, and swapped it with another, and now I have
Download : 35.9Mb
Upload : 9.32Mb
So all is much better on the downstream 🙂

As an aside I recently requested an "upgrade" from the outdated Fibre package I'm on to "Unlimited". It claimed that the upload on both my current and the new is 19Mb, yet mine seems to be set to 9.5Mb still. Is it that the upload limit has only just risen and this hasn't been updated yet, or will I be seeing an improvement there when the IP Profile is updated?

Re: Fibre speed, gradual decline over time

Seems that the homeplug was the cause here then  Roll_eyes glad to hear that this is now resolved.
If you need to perform a speed test in the future however, this will need to be done with a direct ethernet connection from the computer to the modem using a single cable.
With regards to the change from 40/10 to 80/20 Fibre, this should be done automatically once the account changes, if for any reason you don't see this then all you need to do is get in touch.

Thanks,
Adam C
