Fed up with slow speed

For some reason from approx 4pm until about 12:30am I have for about a getting seriously slow speed 0.2Mps up and down and the internet is virtually useless for anything, this has been going on for about a week now, during the day it is fine and I am at full speed.
So am I being throttled for some reason???

Re: Fed with slow speed

Hi there,
You're lucky I caught your post before leaving for the weekend Smiley I've just looked at your account and can state that throttling or traffic management of somekind is't likely to be the cause of your issue. It looks far more likely that a fault of some sort is causing the drop in speeds.
I'd advise browsing to https://portal.plus.net/apps/kbdfaults ASAP for advice on what to check at your side and to log a fault with us.
I hope you get this sorted soon.

Re: Fed with slow speed

Thanks Adam, I barely was able to use that link to report a fault, however it is now reported.

Re: Fed with slow speed

Well I have had a reply saying there is a fault on my line, not convinced as it seems to be time related, if there was a fault on my line or equipment it would always be there, I was on a slow speed until just after 12am where in then went straight up to 7.5Mps this has been the same every night, faults on line don't cause that!
I will now run a speed test and certain points in the day and record the info, currently I am getting 6.4Mps which is what I would expect, in a few hours time no doubt it will drop to a unusable level again.

Re: Fed with slow speed

I had something similar with a REIN problem. The power supply to the monitor on a neighbour's PC was radiating noise.  Initially this caused a disconnect; the line then resynched at a lower speed, but the interference caused massive packet loss so the throughput was way down - whilst the sync speed was about 2.2 Kbps the internet was (like yours) virtually useless. This continued until the noise source was switched off.
On the attached screenie the virtually unusable period was from 19:18 to 20:47.
Ref your problem, it could well be that something with an electrical fault is being switched on at 4 pm and off at 12:30 am.  It might be on your premises or it could be in the local area.  I eventually tracked my problem down with the aid of an off-tune AM radio.  I could hear the noise, and it got louder near the source.

Very interesting ffox and something I will try to investigate.

Re: Fed with slow speed

Just checked what was listed as the fault:
Fault Type:FAULT - Battery Contact
Test Results: Fail - Fault located in local network
What does that mean?

Re: Fed with slow speed

It means your line is in contact with another, probably due to failed insulation.
See Kitz's Connection Problems page for more information. Battery Contact is mentioned in the ~ Noisy Line paragraph.

Re: Fed with slow speed

Cheers for that, I wonder if this has anything to do with a BT Engineer doing something outside on the pole recently

Re: Fed with slow speed

Could be, wonder if there is water in the junction box. Water and dodgy insulation don't mix well.

Re: Fed with slow speed

Well I guess the problems do tie in with the weather turning rainy here. Still don't understand why it would have a very specific time window when it's good and bad, if there was water or a dodgy connection this would always be bad and not at preset times.

Re: Fed with slow speed

The time-related nature of the problem might be associated with usage patterns of other lines interfering with the performance of yours. Since a fault has been identified with your line that needs resolving first.

Re: Fed with slow speed

Engineer has been today, said he couldn't find see fault in the exchange etc but did say he could see there was a fault from the exchange to the junction box so moved us to a different line.
All fine as per normal until again after 4pm and the speed drops and I am sure it will again speed up after 12 midnight.
Below are speed tests from last week + one from today to show the same.

Re: Fed with slow speed

Hi lgales,
It looks like you're on an incorrect traffic management profile. We'll get that sorted and see how it goes from there.
