Fed up of slooooooooooooow speed

Hi There. I have been with Plusnet for about 6 months and at the start my speed was not very fast but usable. When I joined I was told i could expect the speed to be around 1.5mb because of the distance from my exchange. I wish I did get this but i am lucky to get 80kbs! I have little or no knowledge of these technical things but I know enough to say that I used to get this on dial up!  I have done speed tests and the fastest its been is about 850mbs. There is nothing wrong with my line because it has been tested when i was with Sky connect.  My router is a Thompson TG585v7. How will i know if the firmware needs updating? Does anyone fee Cry :'(l like helping a total novice? I just want to be able to use youtube without having to wait around 15 mins just for a song to download enough to watch it!
Thanks in advance  Smiley

Re: Fed up of slooooooooooooow speed

Assuming you are not using wireless, or telephone extensions:-
I would phone Plusnet about your problem.
Ideally, do it at some off-peak time such as late in the evening, unless your phone calls are free.
At peak times, the call waiting times can be enormous!
Meanwhile, try to plug your router into the master BT socket.
Try to find out how to access your router's stats.

Re: Fed up of slooooooooooooow speed

Thanks for replying Jeremy
I have got into my router (first time for me!) and here are my stats,

DSL Connection
Link Information
Uptime: 0 days, 15:22:59
DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 2,144
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 13.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11.5 / 18.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 24.0 / 39.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 24.0 / 18.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ALCB
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 26 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 2 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 5,739 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 4,172,785
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 410,005
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 269,979
By the way, I am wireless. I know the line is ok because it has been checked. What do i do now. I have tried abput 10 times to get my speed via BT speed test but it comes up with an error every time.
Thanks again,
Karen

Re: Fed up of slooooooooooooow speed

Those stats aren't very good, there are a lot of errors considering the uptime of 15 hours and the SN margin of 18db. Given your attenuation your line ought to perform better than that.
Can you plug the router into the test socket ( see here http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/bbfaults/master_socket_testing.shtml ) and repost the stats, that will
tell us whether any internal wiring is having an effect.

Despite what you may have been told, your line is not "ok" in the slightest.
First step is to do as MisterW recommends, and plug your router into the test socket and repost those statistics from your router directly after connecting.  this will allow us to determine where the issue may lie.
Once we determine that, we can guide you through various options to increase your speed.  Just as an FYI, the theoretical max sync rate on your line is around 7,104Kbps, so around 3x what you are currently seeing.
Cheers

Re: Fed up of slooooooooooooow speed

Well, I dont know what this means, but I am still plugged into the test socket and have done a speed test using the tool on this site and my download has increased to 1700mbs! I have just played a video on youtube with no buffering at all!  Can i leave it plugged into the test socket?

Re: Fed up of slooooooooooooow speed

You could leave it plugged into the test socket, although any extensions which are wired to your master socket won't work.
It would certainly suggest though that you have a problem somewhere with your internal phone wiring and/or phone sockets..

Re: Fed up of slooooooooooooow speed

Hi
I have now plugged my landline phone into the extension in the lounge, plugged the router in the main socket in the hall (no longer in the test socket) and here are my router stats;

Link Information
Uptime: 0 days, 0:10:12
DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 1,376
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11.5 / 18.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 24.0 / 39.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 19.0 / 17.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ALCB
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 23,123
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 211
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 100
and my speed test is now 1064kbps
I have NO idea what this all means!

Re: Fed up of slooooooooooooow speed

I would say that you have problems with your internal lines.
I assume that your phone is plugged in via a filter?
It may be worth trying an alternate filter for your phone.
Essentially BT think you have a very unstable line.
Quote
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:  24.0 / 18.0

If that 18dB was to come down to 6 or 9 you should see a much faster download speed of 4000+ kbps.
When restarting your router, don't do it more than once or twice an hour (and ideally not at night-time) - BT will think your line is really bad.
Obviously your telephone system is feeding noise into your main socket.
Do you have a filter with two connections - one for phone, one for ADSL?
If you don't mind keeping your phone next to your router you could try plugging both of these into the test socket.
Assuming things stabilise for a few days, the next step will be to contact Plusnet...

Re: Fed up of slooooooooooooow speed

Thanks for that. So, assuming tomorrow i put the phone line and the router back into the test socket using my filter, this will affect my dB?  Do I then leave it for a few days to settle down?  Depending on what happens do I then contact Plusnet?

Re: Fed up of slooooooooooooow speed

For now, I would be inclined to leave your router plugged into the master socket as this is giving you by far the best results.
I'd like to query though, how many extension sockets you have with phones attached, and do they all have filters fitted to them?
The other question I'd like to ask is, what kind of extensions do you have? are they hard wired (like an engineer would install) or are they the type that you would buy from Argos for a few quid?

Re: Fed up of slooooooooooooow speed

Your noise margin would drop from 18dB to 6dB - but only after a period of many weeks without any significant problems occurring.
Plusnet can request a fairly immediate reset - but only if your line shows several days of stability.
Assuming you have proper internal cabling, it is likely that you can substantially your internal wiring by:-
Cutting a wire (the right one) at the main socket!
If you don't fancy that, buying a special faceplate which screws onto the front of your BT main socket - cost around £5?

Re: Fed up of slooooooooooooow speed

There are 3 other phone sockets that appear to be proper ones and not from an extension kit.  I have the landline now plugged into one in the lounge and the router into the main socket. Where do i het one of those special front plates from? I dont fancy cutting a wire.

Re: Fed up of slooooooooooooow speed

See http://www.shop.bt.com/articles/promotions/product-promotions/bt-i-plate---will-it-work-for-me--5124...
Your socket MUST have the BT "pied-piper" symbol on it.
You can get it from http://www.adslnation.com/products/xte2005.php (more expensive)
or
http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&safe=off&biw=1680&bih=839&q=i+plate+adsl&um=1&ie=UTF-...
That last URL indicates that you have to remove part of your BT socket and replace it with the "i-plate" and also how it works.
