Falling Broadband speed

I have had a very long running problem with my broadband speed which started off at1.5mb went to 1.7 then 1.5 and has now dropped to 1.3 every time i report this i am told my line will not support anything over 1mg, when i ask for an explanation as to why if that is correct the line speed has been 1.7 i get fobbed off with line speeds very and my line is running over its limet  i am getting very frustrated can any one suggest anything i have done the usual test as suggested by plusnet or is my line speed being reduced
i am running a copper adsl cable direct from the main socket and a technicolorTG582n router

Re: Falling Broadband speed

Hi the info asked for is

dsl connection bandwidth 448 / 1.696 ,data transferred 226.47 / 1.99,dsl type ITU-TG.992.1
BT broadband performance check download 1.32 upload 0.36 ping 39.75
highspeed broadband  estimated line speed not recorded, current line speed 1.4
Master socket test no difference

Re: Falling Broadband speed

Topics merged and you still haven't provided the full stats - noise margin, speeds and attenuation as given by the router

Re: Falling Broadband speed

I see you are on G.992.1 (ADSL1) - is that because you are on 20CN not 21CN? On 20CN/ADSL1 I was getting about 2Mbps but on 21CN and G.992.3 (ADSL2) my line went to 2.5Mbps and now (following a line repair) supports 3.8Mbps/3.5dB down, 700kbps/6dB up, with attenuation 58.5-61.5dB down, 37.5dB up - not dissimilar to yours - and a CRC error rate around 10 per hour. However, I am unable to compare that with ADSL1 as it is not possible to get a sync, as a result I "force" the modem/router to use ADSL2 only, as ADSL2+ is a nightmare Shocked
However, changing to 21CN could be a gamble as, IIRC, you cannot change back if your performance drops Cry

Re: Falling Broadband speed

Your router upstream and downstream line attenuation numbers are similar to mine (31.5 and 60.5dB)
I was on ADSL1 on 20CN and getting at most 2M speeds on a good day. but was upgraded to 21CN (still on ADSL1) and am now getting 2.5M. You are most likely on ADSL1 over 21CN, as your Plusnet profile is 1.4
I notice your downstream SN margin is 9dB, you could get better speeds if you request Plusnet to reset this to 6 dB. I don't believe they can do much more unless you can pay extra and have a fibre connection. ADSL2+ doesn't usually give any benefit for your line conditions, I'm not sure about ADSL2 (someone else may be able to give an opinion on this)

Re: Falling Broadband speed

The speed you get is dependent basically on two things
The attenuation - this is the amount the signal gets reduced as it travels along the wire from you to the exchange and is generally a function on line length
The noise margin - this is essentially the difference between the theoretical minimum noise margin over background noise to transmit the signal and the actual noise margin required  (I am keeping this very simple and as such it isn't technically totally accurate).
The equipment in the exchange sets the default noise margin - that is the margin it starts of with when setting the sync speed. The normal start point is 6dB but if there are too many errors or the line is unstable it increases it in 3dB jumps. Note that because it is all done on a logarithmic scale each 3dB increase effectively doubles the noise margin.
In your case the default noise margin has increased from 6dB to 9dB which will reduce your sync speed.
Plusnet will be able to see if the line is stable or not and, if it is stable, they may agree to initiate a retrain which will drop the noise margin back to 6dB and increase the speed. There will then be a 10 day training period during which the automatic systems in the exchange will monitor the connection and either leave it at 6dB or increase it back to 9dB
However before doing that we should, if possible, check that your internal wiring isn't further degrading the signal.
Do you have a modern master socket with a removable lower section - as described in the video linked in this post http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,96155.0.html
If you do can you connect the router to the test socket via a filter and report the stats again. Please do this during daylight hours
