FTTC suddenly v.slow

All was going fine (33mbps/down 10mps/up, 18 ping) ....when performance dropped off a cliff
download went to 0.12 , ping to 101ms ... upload was fine
All the hints WRT copper connections are no use as I can't see what the real modem is doing ... the "Technicolor TG582n FTTC " knows
nothing about what is going on, found this:

Is this what I need to do to get the figures? ...sigh ... means I'll need to run yet another cat5 cable

Re: FTTC suddenly v.slow

That was my guess too
...however being on FTTC I cannot see line behaviour (below inner IP traffic)
so I'm flying blind WRT what is actually happening.

Re: FTTC suddenly v.slow

You can run the BT speed test at http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/ and click on Further Diagnostics to check your line profile speed. If that keeps dropping, it's an indication something is wrong.
You can also set up a ping monitor at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/monitors.html which will monitor your line for latency/packet loss. The only downside is that you will need to keep re-creating a monitor when you reboot your router/modem or lose synch (if you've not got a fixed IP address with PlusNet).

As long as your BT modem is the Huawei HG612 and not the ECI variant that they also use then that is the guide to unlocking it and accessing your line stats.
This: http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,112626.0.html may also be of interest.

Hi vetterlein,
Have you been able to perform a speedtest and run further diagnostics?

Re: FTTC suddenly v.slow

A few seconds after speed all went back "nearly normal" ping remain long for a while  ... something odd was going on ... feel rather blind without any real stats

Re: FTTC suddenly v.slow

If you read and follow the guide it is not particularly difficult to unlock the HG612 (though you do so at your own risk, I've not heard of anyone 'bricking' one).  If you also download the original firmware then you can always return it to its original state (not that you're likely to need to).

Re: FTTC suddenly v.slow

OK, feeling kinda silly now .....
I printed off the PDF "howto unlock"  ... I'd kinda assumed the images would be pointed at there somewhere .... but not as i can see 😞
So where are the new and original images ?

Re: FTTC suddenly v.slow

Many Thanks for that .... got it (should have posted parent link earlier) http://huaweihg612hacking.wordpress.com/about/
Anyhow that went smoothly enough ... bit of a disappointing UI  ... guess I need to use the tools to get anything useful.
Next job is to figure out how to leave this wired? (the Modem is in a different room to my computers)  .... I can run another cat5 beside the eth1 cable .....but what then?
Can't just plug it into my household switch (it's a 10.x.x.x network)  the Plusnet (techicolor) router seems a tad risky  ... it's 192.168.1.254 ...so right subnet ...but feels a tad odd .... does that work? ...I guess the web-interface-stuff just appears on 192.168.1.1 the techicolor is 192.168.1.254  .... and my internal firewall box is 192.168.1.x ...so it's just another interface on the 192.618 side of things?

Re: FTTC suddenly v.slow

It's a good while since I had mine connected (using an 'all-in-one' now) but I think I did run a second cat5 from the router to the modem specifically to access the modem GUI.

Hi vetterlein,
It would be a good idea to raise a fault if you continue to have problems with the speed of your connection: http://faults.plus.net
