FTTC Router & Red Cable

To keep this simple I have just had FTTC installed and have a BT modem located near to the master socket. The guidance which comes with the router states that you should use the red cable provided but I would like the locate the router in a more central location within our house and intent to run ethernet to it.
I have setup and have internet on at the moment (currently at 2Mbit) and I am awaiting this to increase and settle before I start tinkering.
Can I use an alternative to the 'red' cable or is there something special about it? (looks like standard Cat5e)
Thanks
Jonathan

Re: FTTC Router & Red Cable

Assuming this is to connect between the modem and the router then, yes, it's standard cat5/cat5e.
