FTTC - October 2013 HG612 Firmware Updates

We have recently noticed that BTOR are delivering revised band plan tones to our FTTC modems (Huawei & ECI DSLAM users).
Users with unlocked HG612 modems are now also seeing that the modem's firmware is being updated.
This seems to be a 2 stage update:-
Stage 1 - DSLAM band plan update
Stage 2 - HG612 firmware update (a few days later).
My logging/graphing programs (HG612 Modem Stats v1.1) have needed an update to accommodate these changes as continuing to use the released version will cause them to lock up.
It also appears that the modem's GUI has been disabled/removed, but Telnet access is still available to an unlocked HG612.
I & a couple of users are currently testing my amended programs & progress can be viewed here:-

To any Plusnet reps:-  Are you able to confirm any details regarding these updates e.g. why, how, when?
AS per usual, BTOR seem to have implemented these changes without warning & with no 'official' explanation (at least as far as us paying users are concerned.

It seems that users close to FTTC cabinets are seeing speed increases, but users a long way from the cabinet are seeing either no speed increase or in some cases a lower speed.
My connection has very recently received the stage 1 update, but I still await the HG612 modem firmware update.

If you are interested in seeing progress with the logging/graphing programs, here's a Kitz forum thread:-

Re: FTTC - October 2013 HG612 Firmware Updates

Last Monday 7th, I noticed my HG612 lost sync just after midnight.
Mine is unlocked and I still have web access at time of writing.  Firmware: V100R001C01B028SP10
When originally unlocked it, I vaguely recall I did delete the 2nd VLAN (ptm1.301).  Do you know if ithat is sufficient to block the update or will I also need to kill the BTagent via telnet every time I reboot the modem?

Re: FTTC - October 2013 HG612 Firmware Updates

I think you have quoted the software version.
I don't know if that updates during the firmware updating process as my modem hasn't been updated yet.

It has been confirmed that this does change though:-
Firmware version  A2pv6C030b.d22g

I believe this is the new firmware version:-
A2pv6C038m.d24j

I have never blocked remote updates, so I'm not sure if it has to be done via Telnet every time the modem is restarted or if it can be done permanently via a GUI setting such as Maintenance, Device, BT Agent

For curiosity, why would you wish to block any firmware updates (apart from apparently losing access to the modem's GUI)?

Re: FTTC - October 2013 HG612 Firmware Updates

Thanks for responding.  Just checked my modem again.  Firmware version is indeed: A2pv6C030b.d22g     so no change then.
Also found my old notes.  It referred to NPR's web page for 'optionally' removing the 2nd VLAN used by TR069, which I guess would be used for firmware updates.

fwiw, I would prefer to block the update until I know what benefit it may or may not offer.  I also prefer the GUI access for convenience when checking line stats and up time on adhoc basis.

We are thinking of building a GUI replacement - at least as far as quick viewing of relevant stats goes.

That could explain the resync i had a few nights back when the openreach modem went of for around 10 minutes maybe it was the firmware being updated .

Re: FTTC - October 2013 HG612 Firmware Updates

Although not strictly related to these changes - but I think there some major updates due early 2014 which will allow ISPs more control over FTTC lines (profile resets/turn interleaving on or off).

Re: FTTC - October 2013 HG612 Firmware Updates

To be honest i think ISP's should of had more control over FTTC from the start.
