FIXED/SOLVED Down from 6MB to 2MB, consistantly poor for the last few weeks

Normally used to download speeds of 600-800KB/s, this has now dropped to around 200KB/s in the last few weeks and I've tried numerous things my end to try and fix from replacing the router, changing wireless cards, using different computers, different firewall settings, both Ethernet and wireless, everything.  Below are the stats you requested in the sticky topic for users having issues:

Router Stats - router is a DG834G v2, same as it has always been and is currently connected to plusnet with the following connection:
Quote
Modem
ADSL Firmware Version 3.02.06.00
Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 8128 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps
VPI 0
VCI 38

BT Speedtest show:
Quote
Download speedachieved during the test was - 1810 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps

Any light anyone can shed would be greatly appreciated,

Re: Down from 6MB to 2MB, consistantly poor for the last few weeks

Danny,
Sounds very much like the problem I had.  See my ongoing post http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,100571.0.html:
Jojo asked the supplier to reset my line and in 10 minutes I was sailing along again.

Hey WearyPlodder,
Many thanks for your reply, i've scanned over the pages you provided and it sounds identical to my issue, i've sent JoJo a quick message so hopefully i can get a line reset and be on my way.
Appreciate the help,
Danny

Hi there,
I realise I'm not Jojo but I've done an SNR reset anyway Smiley Let us know if it doesn't help and we'll get it sorted for you. It should take effect within a couple of hours.

Re: Down from 6MB to 2MB, consistantly poor for the last few weeks

Its been a few hours and after a few router resets and whatnot im still recieving the same poor speed, i've gone on BT Speedtester again and im still getting:
Quote
IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps

The IP Profile is simply incorrect, if the reset had occured poperly surely this should be resting at 6000 or 8000?
Kind Regards,
Danny

depends how you did more than one router resets in 4 hours plus a few what nots, you have more than likely mucked it up again

No it wouldn't.
Too many resets can raise the default noise margin it won't directly affect the IP profile which obviously hasn't reset as it should

Re: Down from 6MB to 2MB, consistantly poor for the last few weeks

In my experience of twice having a SNR reset on my line following two intermittant  line faults, the instruction from Plusnet/BT Openreach to the exchange DSLAM to change the target noise level is always accompanied by an instruction to perform a router re-sync at the same time.
So it was not necessary for me to do anything with the router. The SNR was reset, the unit then re-sync'd at the higher rate, and shortly after that (day or so) the IP setting then following it up.  The router was untouched by me throughout.
I have somewhere a routerstats trace of the actual point of the target SNR being changed and the re-sync happening.
Is the OP on 20CN?
If so then they are already at the max sync of 8128, so changing the SNR level back down is not going to make any difference....they can't sync any higher.  The snr margin is not quoted, but I don't think it is the issue to be honest.
I'd agree with the other replies, I'd go for 'stuck IP setting' . Presumably there was some issue with the line which caused at some point the sync rate & consequently the IP level to drop catastrophically, and now it won't go back up.......
Assuming they are on 20CN, the max IP profile setting with a sync rate of 8128 is 7150.  And the max possible download speed at a quiet time (Sunday early morning!) would be around 7000kbps (7.0Mbps or 0.85MB/Sec) at that IP setting.

Re: Down from 6MB to 2MB, consistantly poor for the last few weeks

The reason for doing a reset in this case is not to change the target noise margin, but to get the DSLAM to forget the current history and start again. On many occasions this sorts out profile mismatch across BT's systems, but sometimes doesn't. Unfortunately this seems to be one of the latter. Sad

For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.

That alone indicates a full retrain is needed.
