Extremely slow speeds - possible filter/socket issue

Hi,
I've been experiencing very slow broadband speeds over the last few days. I suspected a faulty filter due to an uncanceled echo (see below) but replaced it and the issue persisted. There are no other devices that could be possibly causing this so it might be a socket issue. Thought I'd run it by here first. Here are my results:
Modem stats:
Down Up
Rate: 288 kbs 445 kbs
Max Rate: 14925 kbs 1140 kbs
Noise Margin: 30.2 dB 27.6 dB
Attenuation: 20.2 dB 8.6 dB
Output Power: 9.3 dBm 11.5 dBm

Protocol: G.DMT2+ Annex A
Channel: Interleaved
DSLAM Vendor Information Country: {46336} Vendor: {IFTN} Specific: {48753 }
ATM PVC: 0/38

Rate Cap: 14925 kbs
Attenuation @ 300kHz: 20.2 dB
Uncanceled Echo: -2.4 dB Suspicious - check phone filters and alarm
VCXO Frequency Offset: -57.7 ppm Ok
Final Receive Gain: 23.8 dB Ok
Excessive Impulse Noise: 0 Ok

So what's going on here? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Extremely slow speeds - possible filter/socket issue

If there was a fault with the filter it's likely that you'd notice that affecting your use of the phone too.

Was there anything connected to the line at all when you obtained those stats?

Re: Extremely slow speeds - possible filter/socket issue

Thanks for your reply Adam. All that's connected is a broadband router and phone via a new filter/splitter. Phone works fine.

Re: Extremely slow speeds - possible filter/socket issue

Do you have more than one telephone socket in the house?

Re: Extremely slow speeds - possible filter/socket issue

Yes, I should've mentioned: tried multiple sockets. Issue persists.

Re: Extremely slow speeds - possible filter/socket issue

Do you have filters in all the sockets that are in use for anything (telephones, Sky box, alarms, emergency call buttons)?

Re: Extremely slow speeds - possible filter/socket issue

Only one socket is in use, and it has a filter on it. No alarm, skybox, etc.

Re: Extremely slow speeds - possible filter/socket issue

Does your line have a <a href="http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/master-socket-guide.shtml#whatsTest">test socket?</a>?
If you have, get connected there and I'd like to run another test so I can compare the results to one I ran earlier for you.
Any noticeable difference should indicate if there's an issue with the socket.

Re: Extremely slow speeds - possible filter/socket issue

I'm not sure if there's a test socket - I vaguely remember a technician telling me that there wasn't one. I'd be able to open each socket up to look later, but I'm at work atm. Thanks.

Re: Extremely slow speeds - possible filter/socket issue

You don't need to open up each socket, only any with a removable lower half (you will be able to see the split across the middle). There should be just one which will be the first socket from where the phone line enters the house.

Re: Extremely slow speeds - possible filter/socket issue

Thanks. I'll have a look when I get the chance. It's an apartment in a block of flats so I'm really not sure if there is a test socket.

Re: Extremely slow speeds - possible filter/socket issue

I'm afraid there's no test socket  Sad
Is it possible that a single faulty socket is causing problems, even if the router is connected to a different socket?

Re: Extremely slow speeds - possible filter/socket issue

It's just as likely to be the wiring as the actual sockets. Do you know which is the first socket where the line comes in to the house? If so the best you can do is to use that one and then carry on with the reporting a fault. If an engineer attends the first thing he should do is give you a proper master socket.

I'm really not sure, but I'll take your advice and call in a fault. Thanks for your help!
