Exchange migration Blunsdon to Haydon

Currently got a ticket open to try and solve drop in speed. Got to the point where an engineer is going to be booked.
My question is do I have to have the Max thingy as it seems erratic at best.
Stats are below but my actual download speed is 128kbps, by the way I'm technically stupid so any replies need to be in plain English.

Re: Is there any alternative to the MAX thingy

The only option in place of Max is a fixed speed product. However, with your line attenuation of 62dB, you are a long way from the exchange so the only product you will be offered is a fix speed 512Kbs connection.
You are better off on Max (once the profile issue is sorted out).
Can you run a BT speedtest: www.speedtester.bt.com and post the results. Also post what number it states under connection settings -> high speed broadband on the member centre page.

Re: Is there any alternative to the MAX thingy

There's a T missing in the link Peter provided to the BT Speedtester; it should be www.speedtester.bt.com.
The high-speed broadband setting is here (you'll be prompted to login).

Re: Is there any alternative to the MAX thingy

Here you go:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  1312 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 98 kbps

profile from member page is Iironically entitled high speed broadband)
Your current broadband speed is 500 Kbps

Re: Is there any alternative to the MAX thingy

Hi
Done line fault and Openreach engineer has been out this morning, what a waste of time. He fitted a new socket, so far its made no difference but I know it takes a while so we'll see.
He said the new socket doesn't require a filter, is that right?
I only use the master socket and the only thing plugged in is a phone, no extensions as it's a wireless router so it's all plugged in to the master.
Thanks

Re: Is there any alternative to the MAX thingy

Does the new socket have 2 wholes for plugging in cables? If so this is whats called a filtered faceplate or socket.
If so they will look different and the smaller one is for the router and the other is a filtered socket for your phones.
They should be labelled probably ADSL and Phone.
You can plug the router directly into the ADSL socket without the white BT adapter.
It is going to take several days for yor IP profile to match your sync rate.
What does a new BT speedtest give - i.e. are you sycing at a higher rate?

Re: Is there any alternative to the MAX thingy

Hey Jennies,
A bit of good news from this end.  You're now connecting with the exchange at ~1400Kbps.  This will mean that once the BT system updates itself, which takes about 3 days, you should start seeing throughput speeds in the region of 1Mbps (roughly 250 KB/Sec).
So, fingers crossed, you should see a considerable improvement in 2-3 days time.

Re: Is there any alternative to the MAX thingy

Thanks, just out of interest (and becuase I am sceptical) what does this mean
Statistics Downstream Upstream
Line Rate 1376 Kbps 448 Kbps
Does it mean I'm connected to the exchange at 1376?

Re: Is there any alternative to the MAX thingy

Yes, that's right.  It's what we call the synchronisation speed.  It's the speed at which your modem or router "synchronises" with the exchange itself.  Your profiled speed is calculated by the speed at which your modem synchronises.
If you have a look at my forum signature, there's a guide about speed troubleshooting which might help a bit.

Re: Is there any alternative to the MAX thingy

Just ran the test, also my connection rate has been 1408, 1300ish for quite a while but the speed never seems to improve, should it?

Re: Is there any alternative to the MAX thingy

No, it won't do it that quickly.  The IP Profile bit is the BT Speed limit.  This takes about 2-3 days to recalculate and once that happens, you'll start seeing improved speeds.
The connection rate is your synchronisation speed.  If you want me to explain further, drop me a PM and I'm happy to give you a ring.

Re: Is there any alternative to the MAX thingy

Thanks James, I'll give it a few days and see what happens speedwise, I've been advised by the openreach engineer to pester BT to get me moved to the new Haydon Wick exchange, he reckons we're about 8km in cabling from the Blunsdon exchange

Re: Is there any alternative to the MAX thingy

Oh dear. I think the 'good news' may have been a bot short lived, just run another speed test and its dropped from 1408 to 160  Sad

Re: Is there any alternative to the MAX thingy

And its still the same today, this has kind of been the pattern for the last couple of weeks, reboot router and its 1370ish within a few hours its dropped to 160, it's back to pretty unusable again today, below is a bt speedtest from a few minutes ago, it's really frustrating.

Re: Is there any alternative to the MAX thingy

Hi Jennies,
What this probably means is that something is happening to cause your equipment to briefly reconnect with the exchange at a low speed.  This is often poor quality filters or internal wiring problems.  I would strongly suggest that you try replacing your microfilter and also to ensure that you are connecting your router into a filter and then directly into the master socket.
