Estemated and current line speed

Quote
Now that your service has now been active for 14 days, we thought we'd let you know the speed as it stands today, by way of comparison.
Estimated line speed: 13Mbps
Current line speed: 2.5Mbps
You can keep a track of your line speed through our website:

Have just recieved a email from plusnet stating the quote.
If estimated is so high why am i still opn a profile of 2500?
Such a low speed would not be good enough to stream hd films smoothly Sad

Re: Estemated and current line speed

Hi Mocha,
I'm sorry that in the interest of being honest and plain speaking with you our response may disappoint.
The speed estimate of 13mb was based on locality, your individual phone line has an attenuation of 47db which means that it is quite a long distance between you and the exchange. With these factors in mind we'd expect speeds of between 5 and 6mb.
I can see that you have raised a fault ticket so we'll leave that for the faults team to deal with and see if we can improve things more towards the kind of line speeds I've mentioned.

Re: Estemated and current line speed

Cool, will leave it to the faults team, thanks for your reply.
This is my bt speed test
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
Download Speed
2066 Kbps

0 Kbps 2000 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 2066 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 800-2000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :0 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 2000 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 14.64:26.0:59.36 (SBE:NBE:PBE)
These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.

Re: Estemated and current line speed

In parallel to the fault report can you post the stats from your router - noise margin, attenuation and speeds as you should be seeing much higher speeds than you are from Adam's comment

Re: Estemated and current line speed

The first thing to try is to connect using the test socket behind the master socket lower section of the faceplate and report the stats as you should be getting much better than 2,994 even with an 11dB noise margin

Re: Estemated and current line speed

Compare
From normal socket
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 444 / 2,994
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 29.5 / 47.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 19.0 / 11.0
From test socket
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 444 / 4,473
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 29.5 / 47.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 21.5 / 9.0
Forget about speed tests for the present - your IP profile is limiting it - and the BT speedtest is not working properly but a fix should be rolling out on the 9th or so I am informed
Basically your internal wiring is screwing up your connection.
A few questions
How many wires are connected to the removable front plate (a photo would be a great help)
If you connect to the master socket (not the test socket) what is the sync speed
Is it possible for you to leave the router permanently connected to the master socket or would that cause major problems

Re: Estemated and current line speed

There is only one cable that has been hardwaried into the front faceplate, upon removing the front there is just the one cable going into the socket which in turns comes from alittle box in the kitchen wich then goes outside to the telegraph pole.
Have no phones ect in the house, just use my line for broadband.
I could leave the router in the socket as i could just get a longer ethernet cable to reach around the sofa just like my phone connection/extension is now.

That would be a much better solution than having the router at the end of a phone extension lead.

Re: Estemated and current line speed

I don't fully understand
This is what I think you have - please correct me.
The master cable from the pole comes to a junction box in the kitchen and then from there to the back of the master socket.
Attached to the removable part of the master socket is another multicore cable with either 2, 3 or 4 wires connected. This leads to another phone connection somewhere in the house.
If I am correct there are two possible reasons for the degraded speed -
the first, and most likely, is that the extension cable you are using is a standard extension lead designed for voice which is really mucking up the signal.
the second is that the extension wiring is causing problems. This can be checked by reporting the stats when connected to the normal master socket
Either way locating the router next to the master socket and using a long CAT5 ethernet cable is definitely the way to go

Re: Estemated and current line speed

Just come back from a weekend trip and i'm pulling 400kbs download speeds with a profile of 3500, have enough speed now for hd streaming, the router is still plugged into the test socket, i'm scared to take it out lol.
Thanks for your helps.
Would it help to turn the junction box into the master socket and do away with the telephone cables?

Re: Estemated and current line speed

Doing it yourself is illegal - if you want to do it you will need to pay BT to do it (£130 +)
