Summat wrong here with my connection.  Today's increase in speed tp 5619 resulted from changing the wireless netgear for a wired netgear modem/router.  There's some history here too.  Some time ago BT were called out and fixed my bad line and subsequently we have had stable connections.  BT man was outside on Saturday and bailed out the underground box in the path.  He was checking on a bad connection further up the road and therefore inspected our branch.

Re: Enormous variation

Hiya,
Are you seeing stable speeds when hard wired into your router as opposed to using a wireless connection?
Can you continue to monitor the situation when wired into the router to see if you experience similar fluctuations.  If you don't, I'd investigate using different wireless channels, checking out cordless phones, and so on.

Re: Enormous variation

Jameseh: the wireless part of our network applies to my Son's PC upstairs, the 2 downstairs are hardwired into the modem router.

Re: Enormous variation

What happens if you remove aforementioned son's access from your network?
Does the speed improve?

Re: Enormous variation

Hi Jameseh,
Luckily I have 2 router/modems - one is wireless enabled and 1 isn't.  It makes not a jot of difference to my connections.  I've just managed to get here after talking to CS & will try the fault checker.
Update to my connection speeds:

Re: Enormous variation

Hiya,
I think you're missing the point I'm making a little bit.
By removing your son's access to the internet, you would be removing his ability to download large files (obviously I don't know whether or not this is happeninig) which would drastically impact your download speeds via speed checkers.

Re: Enormous variation

Please note that certain p2p software may be downloading/uploading  in the background - even when the user in question is logged out and has paused the download!  Typically, I have noticed this with a MSWindows box and Channel4 4oD.  So, to check for sure shut down completely the PC in question.

Re: Enormous variation

Jameseh: Oops if I missed your point.  No.1 Son's pc is off this morning and I have reverted to old netgear modem as my connection speed was atrocius.  I will monitor the speed of this modem.
Mickki: thanks for that.

Connection just after 9 this morning was reset to the non-wireless router:

Was that using FF? Despite what the website claims I think the BT speedtester probably works only with IE. From what I recall this is a Java related issue.

Re: Enormous variation

Can you hear crackling on your phone line? Sounds like the BT man should have re-done some joints after bailing out the box.
