Drop in IP Profile and download speed

For the 3+ years I’ve been with Plusnet my download speeds have been consistently 5Mbps or better with an IP Profile of 5.96Mbps whilst using both the TG582n Router and, latterly, the 2704n Router. However, over the last week the download speed dropped to less than 2 Mbps.

I have reset the router and the download speed has improved slightly to just over 2 Mbps with an IP Profile of 4.9Mbps.

Noise margin:

11.0/6.5

Line attenuation:

31.5/49.5

I would be very grateful please if Chris or another staff member could reset the profile or whatever else needs doing to return the speeds etc to previous levels.

Many thanks in advance for your help and advice.

Re: Drop in IP Profile and download speed

Looking over your line everything is set correctly, you should be seeing speeds closer to 4.9Mb/s than you currently are.

Upstream DSL Link Information Downstream DSL Link Information
Loop Loss: 32.3 49.5
SNR Margin: 10.5 7.0
Errored Seconds: 0 0
HEC Errors: 0
Cell Count: 3816 10123
Speed: 800 5632

Maximum Stable Rate (KBPS): 5120 Fault Threshold Rate (KBPS): 4096
Mean Time Between Retrains (Seconds): 86400 Mean Time Between Errors Upstream (Seconds): 43200
Indicative Line Quality: G Mean Time Between Errors Downstream (Seconds): 2057

Your line hasn't been profile at higher than 5200 going back to February, it seems to have mainly fluctuated between 4700 and 5300.

Re: Drop in IP Profile and download speed

Many thanks indeed, Chris, for your quick reply which is much appreciated Smiley

I took the IP profile figure from a BTW screen shot I saved 4 February 16 ( I guess perhaps just after I received my new router) but your figures paint a much fuller picture, thank you.

It seems strange for the download speed to have dropped so much from the previously generally consistent 5Mbps or thereabouts especially since you say that looking over my line everything is set correctly and I should be seeing speeds closer to 4.9Mb/s than I currently am.  BTW speed check is now showing a download speed of 1.68Mbps in red.

Is there anything that can be done to improve matters please?

As before, many thanks.

Re: Drop in IP Profile and download speed

Hello again Chris,

Just to be doubly sure the problem isn’t at my end, throughout last evening (Thursday) I tried both the old and the new routers in different phone sockets in the house including the main test socket but to no avail. Whilst the connection speed/IP Profile improved unfortunately the download speed remained stubbornly low at much less than 2Mbps. At one point it was less than 1Mbps.

This morning it is a little over 1 Mbps.

With this mind and before I log a line fault is there anything at all that you can do at your end please to improve the situation?

Many thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Re: Drop in IP Profile and download speed

Are you connecting via wireless or Ethernet?

Re: Drop in IP Profile and download speed

First, many thanks for taking the time to pick up my issue.

To answer your question, I am connecting via wireless since unfortunately I have no telephone sockets nearby.  FYI everything was fine before I went on holiday a couple of weeks ago which I appreciate doesn't mean it would remain so.

Further to yesterday's experience and my own testing last evening I re-checked my download speed around lunch time today and it had returned to around the level it was previously.  It may be that Chris, or someone else, has been able to 'fix' the problem.  In any event, hopefully the current download speed will continue - or even improve Smiley

Notwithstanding the above good news I would welcome any additional advice that you may have please.

Again, many thanks for your help.

Fix

It may be that Chris, or someone else, has been able to 'fix' the problem.

I'd love to take credit, but I didn't do anything to fix this!

As it's wireless it can be more susceptible to interference and speeds can be more erratic.
