Dramatic drop in connection speed and no hope in sight!!

I was previously with pipex for around two years prior to moving to Plusnet. One of the reasons for leaving pipex was that I used to get a download connection speed of around 2400kbps, but during the time it took to repair a computer fault, it dropped to below 500kbps and has stayed like that since.
I contacted BT who did find a fault and fixed it, but the poor download speed remained the same, positive that it was my routers fault, I upgraded the firmware, which subsequently fried it.
My figures are definately right as Youtube used to play instantly with no pauses, but now I have to wait for a minute or two until the majority of the video loads. All the ISP connection speed estimators now only quote 500kbps, when previously it stated a LOT more.
I have tried BT speedtester but cannot get the site to go further than the initial loading screen. Thinkbroadbands results tonight are 407.11kbps download and 232.63kbps upload.
I have since replaced my router with a Netgear DG834G, which is connected to the master socket with micro-filter attached as is my phone. I have a near new Imac with no viruses....
Please help!

The definitive answer is your upstream sync speed. 288Kbps indicates a fixed -rate product.
No, it doesn't cost a penny.
The main reason why is that you (will probably) have been migrated across on a "like-for-like" product. I guess that your previous ISP tried putting you on a fixed rate product to "fix" your problem.
With your attenuation, on a decent quality line, you should be looking to achieve around a 5536K sync speed, which should give you a 4.5Mbps IP Profile

You are already on upto 8Mbps just checked it on BT provisioning system. however I've the line with the faults diagnostics tools and it looks like the line has been capped by BT
We need to contact BT to uncap it, but you need to raise a speed fault at http://faults.plus.net first
could you please quote this in the fault details:

Yeah initially it looks like it fixed 512 product. a bit of digging reveals the truth

I will do the speedtests tonight when I get home.
Thank you for your patience and help, I was so frustrated about it, but never actually did anything about it, because I thought there was nothing I could do. I have had extensive dealings with BT in the past and so have been put off doing anything. BT customer service, do anything but service customers in my experience.

the line will go through the training again for ten days, try to keep the router switched On always at the master socket as having a solid connection for the first few days will set the IP profile to the maximum speed your line can support.
