Re: Downstream vs Upstream Noise Margins

Talkcomp - Are you available this afternoon?
If not, please let me know and I can get it cancelled.
I'm very sorry that we didn't seem to be able to get your requested engineer time.

Re: Downstream vs Upstream Noise Margins

Well, over two hours and I have had a new pair all the way back to the Green Cabinet and a reset at the Exchange and guess what.  They have made it worse.
DSL Driver Version:  AnnexA version - A2pB022g.d20e
DSL VPI/VCI:        0/38
DSL Status:          ShowtimeRetrain Reason: 8000
DSL Mode:            ADSL2
DSL Channel:        FAST
DSL Upstream Rate:  444 Kbps
DSL Downstream Rate: 162 Kbps
                      Down        up
DSL Noise Margin:    5.9 dB      12.3 dB
DSL Attenuation:    51.5 dB      29.9 dB
DSL Transmit Power:  0.0 dBm    12.9 dBm
Down Atten has moved from 44 dB to 51.5dB and Up from 24.0 to 29.9.
Down Speed from 7215 (avg) to 162 and Up from 1025 (avg) to 444.
They then told me my two hours were up and PlusNet would need to contact me to re-arrange another visit!
Not too impressed as I am guessing PlusNet will not contact me for at least 24 hours and I am unlikely to get a visit this week.

Re: Downstream vs Upstream Noise Margins

Hi,
Thanks for your time on the phone just now.
I've called BT on the off-chance that the engineer might have filed his notes back to Wholesale, but unfortunately this hasn't happened yet so I've not been able to book a further appointment.  I'll try to give it another shot before I go home tonight, or it'll be first thing tomorrow morning.

Re: Downstream vs Upstream Noise Margins

I've booked an engineer appointment for tomorrow afternoon.
I'll need to confirm later on that it's been booked in all BT systems.

Re: Downstream vs Upstream Noise Margins

James,
Thanks for booking.
However, just come back from a meeting to find I have no sync at all (and have not had any sync now for over an hour).
Tried logging a call and was advised that if I did they would need to close my "intermittent" call (i.e. the one with the Engineer tomorrow).
Effectively down now until BT engineer arrives sometime tomorrow, that is, if they can fix it.

Re: Downstream vs Upstream Noise Margins

Thanks for the update Simon Sad
As I mentioned, I think we're going to have to wait for the engineer, but if you can try the test socket and your spare modem, it helps to rule everything else out.

Re: Downstream vs Upstream Noise Margins

Engineer arrived at 13:00.  Agrees no sync. Goes to Cab. Gets 1 Mb and then returns to my home and gets 106 kbs download.  Apparently my provider has set me at 1Mbs line speed (Oh no they have not) and they have now turned on interleaving. Why?  Errors were not the problem.
Now stolen business line to test cabling between Cab and home.  Already mentioned he has two hours and then he is off to Shperd's Bush. So I've got another 30 minutes fo his time!
Simon
NB
Figures on his kit, not mine. Att has increased, thus reducing by sync speeds when they finally fix it.

Tell engineer we're extremely sorry for tampering with equipment that we have no access to.

Re: Downstream vs Upstream Noise Margins

Ok.engineer leaving and I have sync (ish).
So where I have (and I have the stats) 7.5 Down now I have 3.6 Down. and Where I had 1024kbs Up, I now have 888kbs Up.
Attn is my worry - WHY has this risen from 44 dB to 50 dB Down and 24 dB to 30 dB Up?
SNR is roughly the same!
Stats below:
--- DSL Information ---
DSL Driver Version:  AnnexA version - A2pB022g.d20e
DSL VPI/VCI:        0/38
DSL Status:          ShowtimeRetrain Reason: 8000
DSL Mode:            ADSL2
DSL Channel:        FAST
DSL Upstream Rate:  888 Kbps
DSL Downstream Rate: 3627 Kbps
                      Down        up
DSL Noise Margin:    6.3 dB      6.4 dB
DSL Attenuation:    50.0 dB      30.1 dB
DSL Transmit Power:  0.0 dBm    12.8 dBm

Re: Downstream vs Upstream Noise Margins

As I mentioned on the phone, I'm surprised that attn has gone up by 6dB when it's only (apparently) travelling an extra 200m.
Did you ask the engineer why this might have been the case?
