Download speeds less than 150kbps

I have been on the ADSL2+ (21CN) trial since February this year and have been very happy until now.
In June I noticed a drop in my download speed but put it down to a blip. However although my net experience has not been greatly effected I don't believe my speeds have ever increased back to what I was originally receiving. Today downloading a file I was getting a download throughput of 85kbps - this is just not acceptable.
The exchange checker shows no issues with my exchange - Upton Park

BT Speedtest today shows: -
DSL Connection rate 18440kbps downstream 1091kbps upstream
IP throughput 916kbps
Both BT and plusnet have my profile as 16000kbps.
The only change that has occurred recently is my switch from a BT phone to Plusnet Home phone during May. It may only be a coincidence but it does appear that my loss of download speed coincides with this change.
I have tried to raise a fault today, but that requires I carry out 3 BT speedtests which can only be done 3 hours apart.
Is anyone able to make any suggestions or move this forward for me please.
Many Thanks,
Kevin

Re: Download speeds less than 150kbps

Hi,
There's no obvious problems showing on your account, as you note the speed profile is set the same as BT and your traffic management profile shows fine. I've run a quick test on the line too and that's coming back inconclusive, there's nothing that shows as a fault but it needs the results of those BT speedtest in order to determine whether there is a line fault or not.
Best thing to do is run the BT speedtest the 2 or 3 more times that you need to do, make sure you reboot PC and router between the tests, then complete the fault ticket and we can then re-run the tests and see it comes back with.
I'd say it was unlikely to be related to the Home Phone switch, but you never know, I'd certainly note that on the ticket so we can check. I'd also suggest running the speedtests on www.thinkbroadband.com and www.speedtest.net just as a comparison to the BT Speedtest and our test (interesting that our test is 50% higher than BT although still significantly lower than previously).

Thanks for the reply Dave.
I will do as you suggest and report on the ticket I began to raise earlier. I will also add findings here for completeness.

Re: Download speeds less than 150kbps

Dave,
I have completed all the tests as requested and completed logging the fault. I am not sure if the additional information I enclosed has been picked up as it is not appearing in the fault status page. Apart from repating the above I included all the test results. I include them here for information.
BT Speedtest 2 : - DSL Connection rate 18440kbps downstream 1091kbps upstream IP throughput 745kbps
BT Speedtest 3 : - DSL Connection rate 18497kbps downstream 1104kbps upstream IP throughput 961kbps
ThinkBroadband test 1: -d/l 679 u/l 922
ThinkBroadband test 2: -d/l 727 u/l 924
SpeedTest.net test 1: - d/l 0.96Mb/s u/l 0.94Mb/s ping 20ms
SpeedTest.net test 2: - d/l 0.66Mb/s u/l 0.94Mb/s ping 20ms

Hope this info helps to resolve the issue.

Re: Download speeds less than 150kbps

Hi Kevin,
Those results look particularly poor.
Are you still seeing similar issues following a reboot of your router?

Hi James,
Yes, those are after a reboot. I habe carried out a furtehr reboot this morning (2am) and retested. I copy here a series of speed tests done with speedtest.net.

As you can see not a great bunch of results. Although the interesting 3 are on 31 July at 6:25am. These prove I am capable of receiving the high download speeds. What I don't understand and is why the deterioration kicks in to a point where the speed is less than 1Mb/s.
I have a ticket open (29347570) which has been escalated. I will be on leave now for a week so hopefully all will be back to normal when I return.

Thanks Kevin.
We're just putting a call into BT for you to determine if your VPs (Virtual Paths) at the exchange are "running hot".

Re: Download speeds less than 150kbps

Returned home from Holiday today to find an update to my my ticket advising that my case was today returned to the CSC - DSL Faults WBC pool. That was at 9:06. Have heard nothing since. It seems that I am therefore not a high priority even though I reported  this 10 days ago and the fault started in May. My download speeds are the same as previously reported. Currently doing an update to AoC and getting d/l speed of 25-50 KB/s. For high speed broadband that is totally unacceptable.
For information, my router was on all the time I was away. I disconnected it for an hour today. Reconnected and it shows the following stats: -
DSL Status:  Connected
DSL Modulation Mode: ADSL2+
DSL Path Mode: Fast
Downstream Rate: 18665 kbps
Upstream Rate: 1083 kbps
Downstream Margin: 12 db
Upstream Margin: 6 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 9 db
Upstream Line Attenuation: 1.5 db
Downstream Transmit Power: 9 db
Upstream Transmit Power: 13 db
PlusNet shows profile remaining at 16000.
I still believe that this fault was caused by my swap to PlusNet Home Phone and so far no one has done anything to disprove that.
Hoping that this will be resolved soon.

I also conducted a BT speedtest, results are
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 18489 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  1091 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 16000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 821 kbps
This test was not conclusive and further testing is required.
As can be seen from the tests carried out two things are apparent.
1) The speed I am receiving is not what would be expected from either the ADSL2+ trial or what I could expect to receive if I was on standard 'up to 8MB' service.
2) The speed I do get is generally less than 1 mbps but early  in the morning (4am) the speed is higher, although still not what I was used to prior to June.
To confirm I was receiving download speeds in the region of 13000+ kbps and I copy below results from plusnet speedtest: -
Jun 4, 20:49 13747 kbps (1.72MB/s) 936 kbps (117kB/s)
May 5, 07:10 15129 kbps (1.89MB/s) 936 kbps (117kB/s)
Apr 25, 17:34 14388 kbps (1.8MB/s) 936 kbps (117kB/s)
Apr 17, 07:33 13283 kbps (1.66MB/s) 936 kbps (117kB/s)
I also copy current connection stats from my router: -
DSL Status:  Connected
DSL Modulation Mode: ADSL2+
DSL Path Mode: Fast
Downstream Rate: 18489 kbps
Upstream Rate: 1091 kbps
Downstream Margin: 12 db
Upstream Margin: 6 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 9 db
Upstream Line Attenuation: 1.5 db
Downstream Transmit Power: 9 db
Upstream Transmit Power: 12 db
I have also conducted tests with other online speed testers and they all give similar results.
The current d/l speeds I am receiving are now beginning to affect my online gaming experience. This really needs to be corrected.
Kind Regards,
Kevin

Hi Neondaze

my last ticket reply has not been answered.
And although my line to the Exchange is fine . in fact only yesterday
it raised my sync, and lowered my interleaving!

Re: Download speeds less than 150kbps

Currently downloading latest NVidia graphics drivers. File size 118 MB, download speed average 55 kB/sec. Total download time 30 minutes. Rather too long I think.
I have no idea since my ticket update this morning if this is being looked at.
What I do know for sure is that I am able to look at other suppliers of Broadband and phone service. I guess Plus Net need to decide if they want to retain a customer of 7 years.

Re: Download speeds less than 150kbps

The saga continues. Apparently BT have conducted tests, although that did not include a visit to the property. Surprisingly BT did not discover a fault!
The result of BT's tests is that I have been requested to carry out more tests at home, which in fact are the self same tests that I was asked to carry out prior to submitting my ticket three weks ago. Why the same tests should now give a different result when the issue has not been resolved I do not know.
I attach for the interest of the forum the reply I have added to my ticket tonight.
Hi,
Having read the results of the BT tests I am disappointed that 1) they showed no issue 2) an engineer did not visit the premises.
Regardless of what automated test systems say there is indeed most definitely a fault. Like the automated test systems, my router stats show that I should not have any issues. However countless speed tests and my general usage of my connection (browsing, sending receiving emails, on-line gaming, video streaming) tell me that my download speed is very poor. I also do not understand why my upload speed should be rock steady at the expected speed but my download speed should fluctuate from high early in the morning (4am) to lower than dial up throughout the day. In fact the only time my speed seems to be anything like it should be is between 4am and 6am (see attached test results). I conducted speed test results yesterday and today and these are attached.
Speed test results 28 and 29 July

As requested I tried tests tonight with no other telecommunication equipment connected. I tested the connection in the master socket. I used different cabling. I used a different router for some of the tests. I used another filter.
I attach details of stats from the two routers I have used, one a Linksys WAG200g the other an SMC 7904WBRA. Both routers are ADSL2+ compliant and are set to ADSL2+
The stats are as follows: -
Linksys Router stats 17:17 before shut down.
DSL Status: Connected
DSL Modulation Mode: ADSL2+
DSL Path Mode: Interleaved
Downstream Rate: 18702 kbps
Upstream Rate: 1092 kbps

As can be seen the routers show I should be getting high download speed. The test results show that at times I get high download speed. Previous information I have given shows that I was getting high download speed. As far as I am concerned the only difference to my set up is the change from BT phone to Plus Net Home Phone. Prior to the change at end May my download speed was rock steady. Only since the change has there been an issue. Has anyone looked to see if this is the reason?
Today when I got home I looked at the phone cables external to my property as these have been a source of issues in the past which BT fixed. I suggest that rather than relying on automated tests perhaps BT should come and look at the wiring again.
I really do want this sorted as at the moment I definitely am not receiving what I am paying for - which is a premium broadband service - ADSL2+ trial withstanding.

Kevin Anstee

I really cannot understand why everyone is insisting that there is not a fault because that is what automated tests show, when the evidence I supply shows otherwise. I am paying for a premium service but receiving dial-up download speeds. Definitely not a happy bunny.

Re: Download speeds less than 150kbps

I can't see whether you are connected to the router by WiFi or ethernet. What you are describing is what I and others have experience with WiFi connections. Normally solved by selecting another channel. If you are using WiFi my first suggestion is to use ethernet to see if this solve the problem.

Re: Download speeds less than 150kbps

Hi itsme,
Connected by ethernet. None of the tests have been connected by WiFi. I should also point out that the test have been carried out on both a pc and laptop, both connected by ethernet so the issue is not with NIC cards.

Re: Download speeds less than 150kbps

BT & Plusnet profiles say 5.5Mbps for me.
PN speedchecker (and any other checker) say about 2.4Mbps - and this reflects my web browsing performance.
