Download speed

Hi.
Should I be getting better download speeds with the following.
Synch connection speed @ 4544 kbps.
Connection time with exchange 1013 hrs.
Download speed approx 2742 kbps.
Anyone advise  please.

Don't know where the 3000 comes from ,always a constant 2700 ish kbps down.

for 3000kbps profile thats about right maybe get 100kbps more thoughput if your runing xp and tweak mtu rwin
the 3000kbps line rate is a profile set so the maxium throuput is 3000kbps but you will see around 2800 max thoughput on that profile.
from the looks of your sync rate thoe you could get a stable 3500kbps profile if you make sure your lines stable and dosent resync and if you reboot router your self make sure you do around midday and not at night.

theres a handy table on here that tells you what sync speed you need to keep above to obatain which ip profile the table says throuput but should say ip profile in my view

That answers the question.
The 3000kbps is the figure from the BT system and is equivalent to the IP profile set by the exchange.
Basically it is a speed restriction set automatically from your sync speed (approx 500kbps below it) and if you have a low speed sync it drops immediately but then takes approx 3 days of constant higher sync speeds to go back up.
For that profile speed your speed test is about right.
For a final check can you run the BT Speedtest http://speedtester.bt.com/ and report the results. This tells you how to do it http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/troubleshooting/bt_speed_tester.shtml

This table shows the maximum possible throughput speeds for the different sync speeds you might see.

well to keep you ip profile of 3000 you need to keep your router sync'ed at or above 3424kbps and to push your profile to 3500kbps you would need to keep your router sync'ed at or above 4000kbps.

When Jim I'm confused,my synch speed has been for several hundred hours approx 3880kbps,a week or so it went up to 4544 kbps so don't under stand
why down speed has not gone up in all that time of well over a 1000 hrs  of constant connection @exchange.

the only answer's to that is your sync rate has a blip every 3 days and drops below 4000kbps theshold and keeps your profile at 3000kbps or you have a stuck ip profile.
iam sure when PN staff pick this up they will give it a poke to unstick it if they see on there data that your line has bein sync'ed higher enough for it to be a stuck profile. stuck profiles do happen a fair bit
how long has your router bein sync'ed at 4544 for?
it takes around 3 days for ip profile to catch up with your new sync and like said before it needs to stay above 4000kbps for the whole 3 days to up to 3500kbps profile

I check synch speed daily ,as mentioned been synched at 3880 kbps for approx 750 hours and synched @ 4544 for 270 hrs approx.
so plenty of time for speed to upgrade surely.

Where is the output from the BT speedtest http://speedtester.bt.com/ ? The profile that it is showing is critical. The PN one follows that usually within 12 hours.
I wouldn't recommend speedtest.net by the way, it has proven to be unreliable. If you want throughput testers http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ or the one at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/
