Download Speed

Since Moving to plusnet my download speeds seem really slow. I have moved from 2mb download speed to 8mb speed so I was expecting to get some good speeds. I live only 1.5 miles away from my exchange an my exchange is green.
Here is my BT Speed Test taken about 15 mins ago:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 3776 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 3000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 133 kbps
Any help would be apreciated.

Re: Download Speed

can you log into your router and post your stats ie attention, snr(noise margin) .
let us know what your atten is on your line will give us a gd idea of how far from exchange you are by line length and the likely speed you will see.
bear in mind that a new connection has a 10 day training period.
what speed result do you get from the member centre speed tester? http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/

Re: Download Speed

That helps in a negative way - both the BT and Plusnet settings are 3000kbps so that isn't the problem
Going back to your earlier post it shows no transfer but 9,465 errors.
Either the router isn't reporting correctly or the error percentage is very high
Assuming you have only been on max since joining Plusnet the downstream noise margin is very high. It normally starts at a default margin of 6dB and yours appears to have increased to 15dB. This either indicates instability or a very high error rate or a combination of both.
Can you advise which router you have as we may be able to suggest some diagnostic tools to point us in the right direction.
Looking in more detail at the router stats your upstream attenuation is extremely high compared to the downstream value - comparison with my stats downstream 51dB upstream 23.5dB - this indicates a major problem with the line.
Have you tried the quiet line test - dial 17070 option 2 both with and without the router connected.
Can you also try connecting the router to the test socket with nothing else connected and report back the stats.

Re: Download Speed

Strewth - that is bad.
Your downstream margin has jumped to 22.5dB and your speed reduced to 2176kbps
Can you try another filter while I look into something which will give a bit more information.

Re: Download Speed

One other thing.
As you are using a Speedtouch 586 v7 I assume that this is the one Plusnet provided.
Can you check with your old router/modem and see what the reported stats are as it is possible you may have a duff unit

if so use the username and password you use to login into your router to see the stats. not your plusnet username and password.

Re: Download Speed

you should set up a password for loging into the router. dont know how to do this on thompsons as iam a netgear dg834g user.
have you left both the username and password blank on dmt and tryed to connect?
