DaiaBu: Poor data transfer rate in general, streaming issues in particular

Hi, I would just like to say, Im getting EXACTLY the same problems as mikeb posted in the OP.
For the past 3-4 weeks, the line has been atrociously unreliable for anything other than simple browsing. Youtube videos stream pathetically slowly, sometimes refusing to stream at all. Gaming is nigh on impossible with massive lag spikes. Browsing the Internet is still possible, but is noticeably slower and sometimes, pages refuse to load at all.
This has come on very suddenly, with absolutely no change in my hardware setup. My line on the BT speedtest reports 7.17Mbps downstream. The Plusnet site reports:
"Estimated line speed:
Not recorded (service activated before we introduced estimates).
Current line speed:
11.1 Mb"
Im using the ISP supplied Thomson router:
"Link Information
Uptime: 0 days, 0:26:58
DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A
Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,140 / 16,016
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 444 / 14,486
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 12.24 / 279.27
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 20.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 14.0 / 26.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 27.5 / 4.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / IFTN
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 517 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 27,014,458
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 32 / 28,335
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 7 / 43,956"
Despite these good line speeds, video streaming is impossible most of the time. Could someone look into this, mikeb is not the only one suffering and it's becoming very frustrating.

I'm looking at your router stats, is this really saying that your router has been on for just 26 minutes and in that time it has logged FEC Errors (Up/Down):  0 / 27,014,458
Looks sky high to me given the power on time. For example I've logged FEC Errors (Up/Down): 37 / 779,885 and my router has been powered up for 17 days.
MikeB is reporting a problem during a specific time frame if your problem occurs all the time, then perhaps try another router.

Split off and title changed - this is not the same problem

I've suffered a few random disconnections, and sometimes the only way to even get websites to work is to reboot the router - this accounts for the low uptime, I must have rebooted it prior to obtaining a log.
However, this is not a hardware fault. I have tried an entirely different router (Netgear DG834) and got the same symptoms. Also, the Thomson has been working fine otherwise.

One thing , i have noticed the Thompson reports Loads of errors for me  Embarrassed  but when Mr BT calls their test equipment only show minimal errors ,,,,, so all i presume is the Thompson Error, s are self inflicted  its not that reliable  Crazy

Hi DaiaBu,
Have you tried a different filter? Are you using the test socket? Are the test results wired or wireless?

Re: DaiaBu: Poor data transfer rate in general, streaming issues in particular

I have not tried a different filter as yet, nor is my router connected to the main test socket. However given that this hardware set-up has not changed since I started with Plusnet, and now suddenly the streaming performance has degraded, I fail to see how this will fix the issue. I will try a new filter when I get the opportunity. I also don't see how it would account for the times when Internet browsing is fine, yet streaming is slow.
The results are for wireless connections on my PC/laptop. However, as before, this has never been a problem before, and Ive also suffered streaming services on devices that are hardwired to the router (my Freeview box for example can stream iPlayer to the TV).
Also, this can be a randomly occurring problem. Usually about this time (now 7.13PM) the problem crops up and streaming videos is impossible. However I've just opened  a Youtube window and tonight, videos seem to be streaming with no problem whatsoever.
EDIT: Two hours later and the streaming speed has dropped again. Although browsing is still acceptable.

Re: DaiaBu: Poor data transfer rate in general, streaming issues in particular

Hi DaiaBu,
Your current target SNR is 3dB, which gives more room for errors. I've raised this to 6dB which should help. It won't take effect immediately so let us know how it goes.

Hi DaiaBu
Thanks for taking the time to come back to me and for confirming that you had tried a different router.
Have you formally logged this issue as an incident/fault with Plusnet ?
Have you tried running some streaming tests first thing in the morning (aka not when your VC connections to your local exchange are likely to be busy - ideally before 07:00, do these always work ok ) ?
FYI I found this site quite useful - http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/diagnostics in proving that the fault was not with my ADSL line or router

Re: DaiaBu: Poor data transfer rate in general, streaming issues in particular

Hi,
Thought I'd bump this thread rather than starting a new topic.
My internet connection was much improved for the past few months and I've been noticing much less in the way of slow streaming problems.
However, over the weekend, the problem seems to have come back. Browsing isn't much slower, but streaming is almost impossible and when I logged onto Steam earlier, the application took a good few minutes to connect - a process which usually takes seconds.
I have however just played an online game for over and hour and found no problems with lag or latency. But on exiting the game I tried Youtube again and found the same - videos basically not loading at all.
Is this is a network wide problem, or am I the only one experiencing this?

We'd see a few more comments on here if there was a general problem affecting streaming.  Have you done a speed test recently?  Try one now and see what speeds you are getting.

Re: DaiaBu: Poor data transfer rate in general, streaming issues in particular

I have noticed absymal streaming performance yesterday and this evening - it just took 458 seconds to receive a 200 second long video over RTMP, 1.7 mbit stream, 2.5 mbit bandwidth.
traceroute 23.62.1.172
traceroute to 23.62.1.172 (23.62.1.172), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
1  192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1)  4.280 ms  4.605 ms  5.380 ms
2  lo0-central10.pcl-ag06.plus.net (195.166.128.187)  33.558 ms  40.005 ms  40.505 ms
3  link12-central10.pcl-gw02.plus.net (84.93.249.182)  58.268 ms  60.108 ms  61.003 ms
4  xe-8-2-0.pcl-cr02.plus.net (212.159.1.10)  36.245 ms  36.740 ms  40.593 ms
5  ae1.ptw-cr02.plus.net (195.166.129.2)  41.173 ms  43.407 ms  44.893 ms
6  a23-62-1-172.deploy.akamaitechnologies.com (23.62.1.172)  33.964 ms * *

The attachment shows a graph of the speed during the transfer, not all of it, but the rest was much the same.
Edit: I just did the same video from Level 3 rather than Akamai, and it transferred at full speed the whole time, taking about 150 seconds.

ejs & DaiaBu
Have you both tested the connection speed whilst you've been experiencing the issue with streaming or at another time?

Full speed being 298KB/s which is my line speed at the moment.
