If you can send and receive text messages, you can use Twitter on your phone.

How?

Re: Current outage

With this outage the knock-on effects look set to continue for some time after the initial problem has been resolved - PN would be well-advised to use caution when texting the "all-clear" (or at least make sure they include the "caveats"!)  Smiley

Re: Current outage

An opt-in SMS service providing details of major service outages only would be great for me (and also my customers).

I see around 50 tweets today. It doesn't look like a good solution to me.

Not if you exclude all the @replies.

How much would Plusnet be charged for texts - at 10p per text and say 50.000 customers signed up that makes £5,000 per time

I doubt PlusNet would be charged 10p per text message, but why not let Twitter pay for the text messages instead?

Easy. Just send tweets by sending a text messsage to Twitter and receive tweets from Twitter by text message. Twitter was originally designed to be used using text messages. Isn't that where the 140 character limit for tweets comes from?

Re: Current outage

I have previously had absolutely no interest nor intention of signing up for Twitter.
Text messaging is such a simple and easy solution.

We are starting to see customers coming back online via alternative routes however the root cause of the problem remains unresolved. Our suppliers have given an estimated fix time of 13:30 today.

But, two hours later ! 13:03
Should be almost immediate.

And some poor person wearing out his thumbs !!
This is available at very much reduced cost from a computer, automated service, you type in the message, choose which ( regional ? ) groups to send to, one click and it's done.
I've seen it done elsewhere.

OK, I think I have set up PlusNet & PlusnetStatus Twitters ok.
No problems on my Orange Mobile.
Virgin, still waiting for first reply to set up account.
T-Mobile backbone.
Checking on internet, apparently Virgin / T-mobile don't support incoming tweets !!

How about receiving a text message from Twitter whenever PlusNet sends a Tweet? Sounds like an easy solution to me.

I would go along with this, but could we have the service divided up into major problems and minor ones. I don't want several texts saying that something is happening during the night but we probably wont notice it. Just major outages.

No problems on my Orange Mobile.

And I've received my first PlusNet Status Tweets !!
It was also free to setup, I get 5 free texts a day PAYG, for life, until 2026 anyway
Thanks     * Rob Dickson for suggesting it to me.

Re: Current outage

Just be careful which number you use.
If you're with a network that uses shortcodes, you should be OK, but if you're sending text messages to Twitter's +44 number, it's not a UK number, so you will probably be charged for it.

Re: Current outage

44 is the international dialling code for the UK (following whatever code is required for an international call e.g. 011- 44- from North America).  If you see a number quoted at +44 just substitute a 0 for +44 if you are in the UK.

Re: Current outage

Although +44 works just as well.
When I was traveling a lot on business all the telephone numbers were stored as +44 so they would work wherever I was

The platform is resilient however we need your sessions to be passed to us from BTW.  In this instance there seemed to be a bit of a lag after the initial drop which is most likely down to devices such as the BT radius platform not being able (or designed) to handle such a large number of simultaneous requests.
