If I use the BT broadband tester here: http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ I consistently get the result:
"Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:
Your DSL connection rate: 7456 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 6000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5547 kbps"
but if I use the PlusNet broadband speed tester here: http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ I get these results:
"Date Download Speed Upload Speed
Today 11:33 3194 kbps (399kB/s) 156 kbps (19.5kB/s)"
Why are they different?
If I look at my line speed information here: https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed it says:
"Estimated line speed: Not recorded (service activated before we introduced estimates).
Current line speed: Not set"
Why is my current line speed not set?
Why don't I have an estimated line speed?

You should have a "Current line speed" value and the absence of one suggests BT Wholesale have yet to provide that value for your line.
Before dealing with the discrepancy between your download speed using http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk and the actual throughput recorded for the BT test, could you confirm what operating system your computer runs, and whether you've optimised RWIN? And do you connect to your router via a wired or wireless connection?

Wired.

XP Home.
RWIN=261072 I use TCP Optimizer from Speedguide.net to set RWIN, MTU etc.
With Madasafish I was used to speeds of >5Mbps. That was only last week so I should really be getting the same from PlusNet without having to reconfigure my TCP settings etc etc.

Quote from: RamiDoodle Hi, just got your "Current line speed" sorted Moose666
Thanks for that. I restarted my router, but I'm still getting similar speeds from http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk
"Date Download Speed Upload Speed
Today 14:09 3133 kbps (392kB/s) 137 kbps (17.1kB/s) "
Any idea why?

I wonder if mybroadbandspeed is not working well. I did two tests in the last hour which show normal download speeds but exceptionally slow uploads. However a test at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ gives the usual 5940/376kbps (down/up) on my 6500kbps IP Profile.

Quote from: spraxyt Is MTU set to the same value on your PC and router?
I can't find a setting for MTU on my router (Thomson TG585v7 from PlusNet). I don't ever remember being able to change the MTU setting on a router. In your experience, can you usually set it?

I get very similar results as yourself at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ - 5638.97/375.65 Kbps.
What do you get if you select "Detailed results" and "Port 80"? I get 3353.47/135.75 Kbps

The Thomson TG585v7 router has an option "Web Browsing Interception", which was enabled by default. I've disabled it. It's not even mentioned in the user manual - which I hate. Can't believe Thomson did that.
Now at http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk>http://from http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk I am getting:
"Date Download Speed Upload Speed
Today 17:17 5683 kbps (710kB/s) 287 kbps (35.9kB/s) "
And http://www.thinkbroadband.com is giving 5606.95/375.31 Kbps even with detailed results on Port 80
Excellent! Thanks for all the help.

That's an interesting one, something for the support centre to bear in mind methinks. I'll look into seeing whether or not we can get the firmware changed to default this option to 'off' too.

It will be worth checking with another router. Could be a one-off, or my router might be a return from another cutstomer.

Quote from: Paul03 The Thomson I set up had it defaulted to "Automatic" (non-PN branded firmware v 7.4.4.7)
Is there any way of finding out what that means? The manual doesn't even mention "Web Browsing Interception".
How can I tell if my firmware is PN branded?

They only started sending routers with PN branded firmware out about 10 days ago or so.
The interception of web traffic would appear to exist so that the router can serve you pages telling you that your ADSL connection is down etc. (as far as I can tell as the manual doesn't mention it!). As for how the "automatic" setting works as opossed to "enabled" or "disabled", I have no idea as, like you, I can't find any detail in the manual.

The attachment shows the relevant section from Help.
With this setting (Automatic) there was no significant difference in my speedtest results from thinkbroadband using the default port 8095 and using port 80.
For most routers I've seen MTU can be set using the web interface but the 585 is the exception. Possibly it can be changed via the Command Line Interface, I haven't checked. The value appears to be 1500 which suits me.
