Glad you're getting there.
All mine is cat5e and that runs fine at 1 gig, even my network here at work which is cat5e and must be getting close to 100 meters but runs fine at 1 gig.

Cat 5e should be OK, but as noted higher up some suppliers give you Cat 5 instead. For the small amount extra I'd go go with Cat 6 for the comfort factor - it's also a bit more robust when you start dragging it round a house.
