Re: Connection gone? redirected to BT Wholesale page !!!

Ive finally connected woooo! Paulge, I think youre on the same boast as i was on my broadband light wouldnt light up so using the ip address (your router settings url) i logged in. username usually being > admin then pass being > the seriel number under your router usually saying SN:00000000
Log in then click the connect button and log in. If you see a page saying authentication failed and the username being paulge@plusdsl.net then the password is what you use to login to the forums.
good luck and let me know how you get on.

Re: Connection gone? redirected to BT Wholesale page !!!

Sorry for such a lengthy contribution - which I've decided to post in case my experience provides any diagnostic clues. My own disconnection woes occurred yesterday morning at exactly 11.00 a.m. My DSL connection was still up and ticking, but when I tried to re-establish internet connection (simply by clicking the "connect" button in my Thomson pages) I received a "Could not bring up link" message".

I was on the phone with CS for maybe half an hour yesterday (around 11.50 to 12.20). Firstly I was asked to try resetting my gateway manually with my login details (which didn't re-establish connection). I was then guided to setup the gateway using a BT test login startup domain authentication (but again no connection ensued). However, within minutes of our conversation the gremlins had gone, and I was able to manually setup my Thomson gateway successfully (circa. 12.22 p.m.),

I didn't think the problem was at my end (no ATM detected?). The agent (I guess following protocol) raised (an ongoing) troubleshooter problem, whilst stressing that I'd be liable for a £60 charge if an engineer called and the fault was found to be internal. Later I was to conclude that whatever was the cause of my temporary loss of connection most likely was related to Potential connectivity issues in the North West which originated and were resolved at times commensurate with my experience.

When I first became aware of my dropped internet connection, I got the same strange message which others are reporting if and when I attempted to browse the internet - i.e. before I can connect I must log in as a more privileged user. As my admin account is the only account which is setup, I did scratch my head at the time, but I didn't let it bother me too much. I've decided to post the screenshot (taken 11.25 yesterday) because I've just noticed that reference is made to DNS Spoofing  Shocked within the address. I'm hoping that's just a pointer to Plusnet security at work, rather than evidence of any hacking? (especially in the light of recent security warnings about the Plusnet site)

If it's of any further significance, since I recently updated my TG585v7 firmware from 7.4.4.7 to 8.2.6.5, I've become sick of the annoying multiple tried to login events which are now logged as standard. Why isn't a solitary "admin logged-in" message recorded instead? From what I can gather the TR69 technology avails itself of a generic username for initial authentication purposes, and I speculated as to whether there was any possibility that some buggy firmware behaviour was unintentionally attempting to connect to the internet with that generic username again, which might explain the "more privileged user" message?  Also, I'm not absolutely sure whether TR69 is designed to do a once-only job in automatically assisting with initial gateway setup (for novice users especially) then retire, or whether Plusnet's (newly found in my case) knowledge of my router's default password has opened the door for further piggybacking on occasion? - whether by Plusnet or potential hackers? More specifically I'm unclear about whether the Plusnet branded firmware upgrade has introduced any possibility of alternative remote login, even after I've changed the default (router serial) admin password? How can I disable TR69? The portal page says "Want to handle setup yourself? Just click 'Disable Auto Setup' and set up your router manually"....but the big red button does nothing.

It's more than likely going to be caused by the planned maintenance overnight which was posted to our service status feed: http://usertools.plus.net/status/archive/1323867880.htm
Unfortunately the work is over-running and I'm just about to put out a service status about it.

Chris,
Why is not possible to put a notice explaining the position, so that we do not have to re-log and re-log;  test that the router is working; log on to gateway etc.,etc.!?

I think that one was the general outage in the North West of England. That affected me too, and notification of this was given by the Plusnet phone system when I called in.
I had to use the router Connect button to get back online when I checked again early afternoon.

We did put a service status out when the work overran: http://usertools.plus.net/status/archive/1323937872.htm
And when it completed: http://usertools.plus.net/status/archive/1323939916.htm
There's one about the speed and performance issues here too: http://usertools.plus.net/status/archive/1323951542.htm
Those that are still having issues, have you powered down the router for at least 20 minutes before attempting to reconnect?

If your connection went down yesterday morning then this isn't related to the same issue that's causing the problems today and is more likely the problem Spraxyt detailed in his post.

Re: Connection gone? redirected to BT Wholesale page !!!

Yeah I'd already concluded that - I linked to the service status announcement in my original post. The reason why I thought my comments might help others today is that the symptoms I encountered - especially with regards to the "Before you can connect, you have to log in as a more privileged user" message are very similar to what is being reported in this topic. I was of the opinion that whatever the explanation for that message is, it is likely to be consistent?

Re: Connection gone? redirected to BT Wholesale page !!!

Everything appears to be up and running once again for the past few hours. However my synch speed has plummeted as per bt speedtester page:
The Performance Tester is now testing Broadband connection. Your configured download throughput speed for this service is 14251 k
After recent telephone line upgrades that BT had been doing in my area I had been enjoying over 21000K 😕

Re: Connection gone? redirected to BT Wholesale page !!!

Hi GJenkins,
Just tried to run some diagnostics on your line but I can't get the necessary results as the system is saying a third BT speed test is required - would you mind running one of these please? Once it's done we can get the test done properly and see what we can do for you.
