The customer services guy today says my line is "unstable" and he hopes to get it stabilised within 3 days.

@ColdharbourDave

Do you know if anything is actually being done, such as an Openreach engineer checking your line,

or are Plusnet support fobbing you off and "hoping" that if you wait three days that you'll stop complaining ?

If you don't know if anything is being done, can I suggest that as you have the Plusnet Hub-2 currently connected, that you contact Plusnet support today, and ask them to do a line check and whatever tests that they claim can only be done with the Hub-2 connected,  otherwise the weekend is coming up and nothing will progress until next week.

Why is PlusNet's service quality now so poor?

Have you registered yourself as having a disability on Plusnet's system ?

By doing so may entitle you to priority fault repairs "for customers who are dependent on their services"

@ColdharbourDave

I would ignore all the preceding chatter, some of dubious value. Plusnet blamed your router, they have sent you a new one, the fault still exists.
So, contact them again to tell them that the fault is still present.

Are you registered with them as vulnerable? If not you should.

Re: Connection goes on and off like a set of Christmas tree lights today

I am registered as vulnerable.

This morning intermittency resumed at 9.20 am listening to Radio4 online.

Bank website then cut off on ID-ing me (as before)

Called PlusNet.

The automatic message says they cannot ID my number (is this the bank problem too??)

The very nice PlusNet lady ran a test and says there is a line fault at the exchange - which should be sorted by midnight Friday night. What a marathon.

Fingers crossed!

@ColdharbourDave Well, at least they acknowledge there is a problem.

Very likely, if there is a line fault , it may well affect the Caller ID presentation.

Just had the internet cut off on taking an incoming landline call.

Seems to support the service centre suggestion its a line fault.

System looking decidedly ropey the morning:

Thunderbird has experienced a network protocol violation that cannot be repaired. The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because an error in the network protocol was detected. Please contact the web site owners to inform them of this problem.

Has now started though.

Facebook and X/Bluesky moving at snail's pace.

Shouldn't PlusNet provide an 0800 number for dial up connection like the old days?

Do any ISPs do that these days?

The TB issue is nothing to do with your speed issue, although the other 'problems' most likely are.

That wouldn't help you in this case, as the dial-up would still be going over the same faulty copper wires.

What you need is a low cost fibre-optic connection, and get away from your extremely poor copper connection.

Earlier you mention that -

I'm beginning to wonder if one of the new fibre providers such a G Network is the way to go.

If  G.Network  is available to you, it looks like a no-brainer solution, at £15/month for Full Fibre ! -

Have you had confirmation your fault has been fixed as until then your connection will remain unstable.

@ColdharbourDave

As your connection is getting worse, try phoning Plusnet again, remind them that you are a vulnerable customer and that your connection is now so bad that even receiving email doesn't work, and ask for priority fault repair.

Openreach are well known for treating Friday as a POETS day (Piss Off Early, Tomorrow's Saturday)

you now need urgent reassurance that something will be done TODAY, otherwise the weekend is coming

and if your line isn't fixed TODAY then you won't get any progress until at least next Tuesday.

Re: Connection goes on and off like a set of Christmas tree lights today

I have never had confirmatioin(s)

Going back over tickets raised regarding this "unustable" service - it started on 18th AUGUST

since when generally tickets are closed automatically, it seems. Certianly not after checking with me.

eg from 3rd September

Dear Mr Warner,
We are now placing an order against your broadband service to ensure your settings are optimal for your connection.
Is address and contact number correct in workplace: Yes
Fault Type:DCN/Speed
If you have any questions, please do not update this ticket, but instead contact our support team directly.
FA Automation Ref: FAULTS6
Kind regards,

Placing an order to stop my internet banking being inaccessible seems a bit [-Censored-] poor if I may say so, when it just sounds like a Tweek at BT openreach.

What happens if I suddenly need funds in an emergency???

@ColdharbourDave

I agree, that sounds to me that all Plusnet have done is request a more aggressive level of error correction in an attempt to reduce the error rate on your connection.  That will have almost no effect given that you obviously have a physical problem with your copper wires, or that there is a fault in the exchange.

You need an engineer to investigate this urgently before you lose both your broadband and phone service.

Do you have a mobile phone, if your landline was to fail completely ?

No fully sure.

Came back from the Proms - PC seems stable.

Had a couple of beers - as one does

Fed up with the reshuffle so put CNN on my TV Freeview/Rauken with PlusNet wifi connection

the screen has the dreaded rotating circle of death

will sleep on it!
